Can't Merge in Farm Valley

I played to level 9 in Merge Farm Valley, spent 230 Gems for crates, and FINALLY spent some of my coins to open new areas.  BOOM.....I can NO LONGER MERGE!!??!!  I can collect items that have spawned, but I cannot "move" anything. I cannot move 1 item to merge it with others. Obviously I understand HOW to merge since I've reached level 9, it just will not LET me. I have tried restarting, I have tried waiting until the next day, I have tried using my phone instead of the computer....nothing. Please advise.
