SWTOR: Crash in Character Select

Hey guys, I keep having an issue with m SWTOR game, when i get to the character select screen and click on literally anything, i get a Windows "Star Wars: The Old Republic has stopped working" message. I've tried everything I could find on the internet. Re-installing, Deleting particular files to force verification, messing with the properties tab, going through my antivirus stuff, And when i tried to do the Windowed mode switch thing with Alt+Enter i got the same result as if i had clicked something. Does anyone have a solution, also i'm pretty computer illiterate so I may not understand some stuff.

@Belgorad so funny story, i let the game finish a full install and the game runs perfectly, I did a repair last night but it hadn't seemed to have fixed it, but I suppose it did.

Also I'm just usig the windows defender at the moment because i had to do a ton of computer maintenance and had to wipe my computer.

Thank you all for your help i Greatly appreciate it!

  • Do you have windows 10 on your computer? the last update broke some things. One thing in particular is that it can make the game crash at the character screen if you switch between windows. Fortunately this only happens when you first open the game and not every time you go to the character screen.

If you have a tendency to look at other windows while you wait for the game to finish loading up, try holding off on that until after you have selected a character. This may be a workaround for you while they work out the bugs.

You can check you list of installed updates if on Windows 10 to see if the creator edition is listed.  If so I would do a restore to before the update.  That update broke things for a lot of players.

If you don't have it then the next time you get a crash, attach a copy of your DxDiag log as per this link here

Ok that's good you don't have the update.  It's hard to tell so that's why I ask first.

Anyway in regards to the log it shows that the app swtor.exe is crashing.  It may have some corrupted files.  First I would try to run a repair as per the following steps:

Non-Streaming launcher - Log into the launcher but don't click Play. Check for small letters "ST" in the bottom left corner.
If this is NOT present, With the new launcher after login , select the username pulldown on the top right and select settings, then press repair.

Streaming launcher - If the letters "ST" is present, close the launcher, right mouse click on the game shortcut,
select open file location and delete the BitRaider folder. Then start the launcher.

Also I would add swtor.exe and launcher.exe to your anti-virus / firewall safe list in case they are blocking or deleting files.  If the above doesn't work try the launcher repair utility as per here.

Lastly out of curiosity what anti-virus are you using?
