Colisseum and Spotlight Are Terrible - For Now.

This is a truly bad event in the current context.

I think the Devs have forgotten that this is an entirely new game. Different characters, different currencies - hardly anything is the same. It was not even clear to me when I started my colosseum events whether attempts are cumulative or not. (FTR: They are not. Only one attempt counts per day, though it's your highest.)

But this is not the worst part about this. I have no strategy for upgrading my new Luke toon, because I literally have no idea where resources will come from nor how many I should expect. Can I buy spotlight currencies? Well it turns out that the game doesn't tell you, though with some investigation you can find out that era mats are for sale. I haven't yet found any of the Era Level Currency for sale, but it might be tucked away somewhere, concealing itself.

Then you have allies show up in your coliseum battle, but what Era Level are they? Do they increase with Lukes EL? What abilities are active? How much health do they have? I have no idea because they don't even pop up as borrowed units in the squad screen so I can inspect them before battle starts. The best I can do is use battle time to read ability descriptions, but his doesn't allow me to compare, say, physical damage and figure out which toons should use damaging specials first vs non-damaging specials. The abilities that we depend on in battle are deliberately concealed from us.

So now I'm playing a game mode that does nothing to improve my EL - or at least doesn't do anything visible - with no idea what a "good" score for my level might be and no easy way to plan strategies before entering combat.

Then let's talk about the Marquee event. Why doesn't this drop EL currency? I seen to increase my shards and thus my promotion level, but that has only the tiniest possible effect on play. I honestly couldn't see a significant difference between 3*/EL5 and 4*/EL5. An attempt at 3* reached 9% damage with a second attempt reaching 12%. The first attempt at 4* reached 15%, but the 2nd attempt reached 12%. How much of this is noise? How much is the promotion level? I have no idea bc I can't inspect stats and my number of attempts is necessarily going to be statistically insignificant.

So I don't know what I'm doing, I don't know where I'm going, I don't know how to get there, and I don't even know if I'm making good, average, or below average progress.

Congratulations, you've created a game mode that is the definition of useless button pushing.

STRONG suggestions:

Put out an actual tutorial that shows ppl what resources they're looking for, where to find them, what they should expect in rewards in the short term, and what resources that should ultimately provide in the longer term.

Don't force us to rely on toons we don't have and can't inspect. The rewards are all arbitrary anyway. Just scale the power of the enemy so that we get with just Luke what you had been planning for us to get with Luke + the borrowed toons, and then delete the borrowed toons. This way we don't have to learn an entire new team at once, we can focus on learning the kit of just one toon at a time, and we are also able to see what we have.

If ppl pay crystals for marquee shards, have the marquee events drop appropriate EL currency at higher tiers (beginning with the 4* tier). I want my characters to get better, and right now this doesn't show me any improvement at all bc shards matter so little compared to EL. So why isn't there a way to invest crystals toward better EL performance? The obvious way to do this is to make EL currency available to those who already invest in the existing shard-based marquee progression system.

If EL currency isn't available for crystal purchase, then allow us to search for a way to get EL currency and then present the null result the same way you do when we're looking for shards for a Journey Guide character whose event isn't available right now. That way we at least get an answer and aren't spending our time fumbling through every row of every store seeing if you've hidden it somewhere. After all, why would you sell mats without selling EL currency? And if you're not showing us, then it has to be hidden someplace, right? This is a recipe for driving your players mad. Do not do this.

Again, I don't know what I'm doing, I don't know where I'm going, I don't know how to get there, and I don't even know if I'm making good, average, below average, or bad progress.

What you've created is a guarantee that your players will hate this. Who wants to play a game when you don't know what you're playing for and don't even know when you've won?

This was clearly not ready for release.

  • Sadly, I find myself agreeing.

I really dislike this new game mode, I honestly do not want to interact with the system at all and have even more currencies to juggle.

  • The new system essentially forces us to start a fresh swgoh account inside the game every few months and return to entry level game experience, with pure p2w reward system on top of that. If i liked that type of play I would rather start the new twink accounts.

  • There is only one viable strategy in colisseum - whale early, whale hard. That is the only way to get reasonable amounts of r10 mats, anything else is fighting for scraps. I was expecting this update to benefit the whales, but not to the point where everyone else is pretty much locked out of r10 (besides the one we get from the calendar). And combined with the relic delta system...

I'm FtP. I spent 6k crystals on a 5-pack of shard cards and 1k worth of currency and mats. 7k total. That's about all I can afford sustainably for an every-2-week thing, but I can afford it.

I'm going to end up with a coliseum rank in the 40s, 50s, or 60s, probably (I was 38th last I looked, but I expect some ppl to pass me up between now and end of the payout period.) Best case is 300 r10 currency.

But the thing is that even though I'm trying this out to see where it goes, I'm not having fun in the coliseum, and I don't see where the mats or currency to level up is going to come from. That's... very opaque.

So while it's possible I might settle in to this pattern for future releases, I certainly can't do anything MORE than I'm doing right now, and if they don't find a way to make this fun, then I don't know why I would. I wasn't a day 1 player, but I have been playing for over 9years and 10months at this point. I have a huge stock of gear. I don't need to level these toons in order to be able to have them at relic at the end of the era.

So why am I doing this?

  • Okay, 24 hours later and I like this update even less than I did yesterday.

First some nitpicks: Can we please not have red notifications on the home button? When you put something in red, it screams "EMERGENCY!" I have always hated that the normal reminders that a character upgrade is available is in red. Literally every character I own has that red notification. It's entirely annoying but I've trained myself to ignore it on characters. Now it's spreading.

    Please, just no.

There is no emergency when we have completed a daily quest item. It's normal part of the game. Red is for warnings. You have always failed to understand that, and it's always been a terrible part of the UI, but seeing it metastasize to the home button is breaking me. What is wrong with you? Aren't you normal human beings who participate in society where yellow is a normal caution color and red is used for the most important warnings? Stop it.

Then there are the pulsing notifications in the triangle-and-exclamation-point icons. I greatly appreciate that these aren't red, but why do they pulse? It's distracting and unnecessary. Further, why is there an exclamation point? AGAIN not everything is the most important thing in the world. Just like red is a color for emergencies, exclamation points are to be used when something is a BIG DEAL!!!! It makes no sense to overuse EPs!!!! Why do that?!?!!!

This new pulsing icon doesn't need to pulse, and it doesn't need an exclamation point. The idea is that the character can be levelled up? Cool. Use an up arrow and/or a staircase as your icon. No pulsing. Just bc modern phones have the memory to make something pulse doesn't mean you have to use it.

And the monster animations? Again, terribly distracting. Today's coliseum boss isn't as bad, but yesterday's Rancor-cousin doing sudden thrashes was annoying. You're very clever to create such art, now let the boss show off its terrifying pose once and then STOP. Don't do it again every time I return to the main Cantina view. Once was impressive. Now I've learned to hate the thing your arts people put so much time into, and that's just sad.

Yesterday's boss was also large enough to block line-of-click to the Shipments icon. Again, please don't.

All in all, rewards are meagre both in the short and long term. I don't need you to give me g1-g11 for free. I worked hard for my gear stash. But if I play hard every day in a game mode that isn't fun with a character whose abilities I can't control with 4 summoned characters whose abilities I can't even inspect, that's what I have to look forward to.

I don't want r10. I don't need r10. The coliseum gives me nothing but r10 and g1-g11, meaning it has literally nothing to offer me. And on top of that, it's not even a fun game mode.

As I said yesterday. I don't know where I'm going, I don't know how to get there, and I don't even know if I'm making good or average or bad progress.

But on top of all that, I don't know WHY a player with a solid stash of g1-g11 would bother. This game mode has nothing to offer us unless we're obsessed with r10. Well, I'm not. Most of my GLs aren't r9, and I'm someone who has r9 Pirate King Hondo, so I'm no slouch in the GL department.

I suppose I'll be back tomorrow to update this thread again, but for right now, I just don't see anything in this for me.

  • Scrybe chimes in, with essentially the same analysis that I have: it's not fun and it CANNOT be fun if we don't know what we're doing, don't know where we're going, don't know how to get there, and have no idea if we're doing well or poorly.

On top of that, they're asking us to pay for gear that we already have stocked up. Because we can't use our gear stockpiles for our era characters, so the hard work we put in means nothing.

While they say we're effectively getting gear for free, we aren't if we're forced to spend crystals for era levels. While whales & krakens will get good r10 mats out of this (or at least relatively good amounts compared to any non-whales they have to face), and while brand new players don't have stockpiled gear and might spend fewer crystals on era levels than they would on Kyros, for everyone else the "rewards" are actually a penalty.

Anyway, here's Scrybe from today paralleling what I've been saying for the last 30 hours:

  • Apparently EA forgot about a department called “testers”; it seems these guys didn't get their money😃 (sad).

  • wow if you are getting the bottom reward of 10 per day it will about 3.8 years to be able to get the relic 10 mats.  Given scores are going to be pretty much the same for anyone that does not spend money whats the tie breaker

guessing each shard to 2000 people with half of them getting 10 era currency per day
