Once you do that first attack, the 10 is gone forever.

That must be it. The 10 banners would only be awarded on the first attack, as long as i didn’t Retreat or force-close. Attacks after that aren’t “first” anymore.

You have to consider that if anyone closes or Retreats out of their first battle, they’ll always be 10 banners behind their opponent.
