You can find the "excuse" as "invalid" as you want, but as far as we know, they are still doing the MM as you join, not when the phase starts. They have acknowledged that we see it as an issue, but they are not concerned. Only thing for you to do is to make sure your mods are right before joining, especially now that crystals are there.
I checked my ranking before the second, third, fourth brackets in the last GAC and on each occasion I was matched in a bracket with 7 players directly adjacent to me on that list.
I don’t think they are matching as we join anymore. Which does make me wonder if the lock at join is needed anymore.
Maybe not. But until they tell us that, we have to assume that they are.
