Mods Effect on F2P: A Case Study

Background
Here is my team.

Before mods, I was finishing 3-20 at the time of my Arena payout. Although GW was difficult, I still finished it every day. However, I had focused mostly on Arena and Raid toons at the expense of synergy toons. Un/lightly modded toons are simply uncompetitive with modded toons.

Mods require 35 toons >= 5* to make 7 synergy squads. I currently have only 14 at 5* or higher.

Problem
So I should just be patient and build synergy squads to get more of my own mods right?

The problem is I can't because my two main sources of progression have been cut off at the knees.
- GW: Completing a GW campaign is going to be almost impossible against the heavily modded teams I am pitted against,
- Arena: It will be impossible to defeat modded teams ahead of me.

Solution
So I have three choices:
1. Accept a significantly slower rate of progression based on energy, challenges, and partial GW completion. Get left behind for months while new features released over that time that will make me even more uncompetitive.
2. Buy crystals to partially keep pace and not get left behind completely. Spend weeks getting creamed until I can slowly catch up.
3. Quit
