Shards - unfair advantage through ships?

One obvious addition from the recent update is that we can now see the fleets of allies, shards members, etc. From memory, on the launch of ships people were supposedly divided equally into shards based on when players started the game - so all seems fair at this point...

Needless to say I am on the ship shard of doom where I oscillate between about 50 and 20 with maxed out ships (top spots are dominated with guys with 7* Tie Advanced / Reapers etc.). This wouldn't be an issue if everyone on my shard was placed on either the same shard or a shard of equivalent difficulty. However, looking over my character shard reveals a dramatic imbalance between those who seem to be on tough shards and those ranking top five with level 70, 5* ships.

As the game progresses, the differences in ship currency will start to make a material difference given their ability to harvest zetas more quickly (5-7 guaranteed additional mats per month). Appreciate it's not the end of the world but it's quite depressing seeing guildmates who have been playing eight months longer than me posting screenshots of their top ten which feature fleets materially weaker than anything in my top 50...

Not sure why they didn't just lump shards together to provide a fairer playing field.
Apologies for the moan - otherwise I thought the recent update was great.
  • People who spend heavily in the character part of the game tend to spend heavily in ships. By putting spenders together they create a more competitive arena which encourages further spending... and thus generating a more challenging shard.

My problem is that half the top ten of my shard have been gifted an easy shard and a number of others have been penalised despite starting on the same day...
  • To put my ship shard into context, 13 out of the current top 20 have a 7*, gear 11 Nilhilus...

I think the problem here is that I started the game in August and when ships came out, there were a lot of spenders who were level 80 - 85, while most FTP players would have been sub 80. For shards that started materially earlier you don't experience this issue as most players would have already reached level 80. For shards starting in September or October only massive spenders would be able to hit level 80 given the cap on energy refreshes. Can't say for certain but this appears to be how I assume they cut the shards up which has led to a massive concentration of big spenders on one shard and effectively FTP ship arenas...

And looking through my character shard, there seems to be a big divide between players who are ranking very highly in ships with weak fleets and those who are ranking materially lower with stronger fleets. This just seems unfair given we all started on the same date and early success (whether through clever farming or paying hard currency) seems to now leave players handicapped in zetas which have become a crucial part of arena
