Ship Power and Character Gear Level

I have a question that I hope gets answered at some point in time.
I understand ship power being tied to other aspects of the game, it is smart and makes you experience and participate in the whole game.

Why is it tied to character gear level?

This has a lot of negative impacts on ships as a whole.
It does not allow for experimentation. It already takes a while to save up the necessary ship currency to level them up. It takes time to get the training droids and ability mats as well.
And now add in reinforcement ability mats. It adds up to a lot of time sinks quickly.
But what gear does is make it so none of that matters until you gear the ship characters up (Especially at top tier). So there is no experimentation. Everyone runs the same ships and the same characters that are multi purpose.

Tying ship power to gear level of the pilots seems to narrow the ship playing field. If that one link was removed the ship combinations would be busted wide open.
It is very easy to justify spending 6.5 million credits to level up sun fac, geonosian spy, cassia, etc... and star them up as well. If I believe I can utilize their ship at max power or very close to it, to see if he would fit into a solid ships combat team.
There is no room for experimentation without potentially wasting a lot of very hard to get gear.
  • Why shouldn't gear matter? I've put a lot of effort into my Clone Sergeant because I used him in the HAAT for a while, but now other teams are way better. So why should my ARC be the same as someone else's who hasn't put that effort in? Similarly, I have a pretty good Plo Koon because I thought he would be better in 1.0 than he turned out to be, so how come I should be punished for having experimented and failed when he was bad now that he's good?
  • Ship power is affected by the crew member's crew power. Makes perfect sense to me. What use is a strong ship with a weak crew?
  • If it was not this way, it would just be a separate grind. So this is a consolidation method for the game.

If they were split, ships would have their own grind and it would still all be on the same pacing and timescale you are seeing now. Now 1 grind (the toon) 2 uses, squad and ship. It's better this way, we dont need 2 grinds, ship and squad.
  • I am proposing that only character gear level gets separated. You would not be punished for it. If anything it would allow you to get more meta ships easier and get back into the game.

@Kyno currently it is already 2 separate grinds. You grind the ship, then the toons, then the toons gear, as well as ship abilitiy mats, character ability mats. It is literally 2 grinds currently.

I want to cut out the separate the character gear grind from the ship power because it will promote diversity even among f2p.

@Waqui I am not saying it doesn't make sense. I am saying it holds ships back from diversifying.
I place in the top 5 and a lot of times first. I have the meta. I am not suffering. I did the grinding.
I just want to see ships that aren't "Thrawn, Biggs, Vader, TFP, Boba, Scimitar."
That has been the meta for a long time. Even at 5 it was biggs and "insert Dark Side ships that were good at target locking."

Sorry I meant separate grinds. I count ship and character as equal. So no difference there if you separate the 2, they both still exist.

But we grind gear for a toon and it benefits the ship.

If we separate them, then we have 2 "gear grinds", that is now double the grind to get the same benefits....

Sorry to say but more grind (especially parallel grinds) does nothing but hurt f2p.
  • @Kyno I am confused. There is no additional gear being added to ships. They would just get the power they would normally get from gear automatically.
So grinding character gear would not make a difference. The only thing that would affect ship power would be mods and character level.
Alternately, character ability/gear could still matter but perhaps have a far less significant impact.

Yes, but you have to be a realist, they are not going to make ships that easy. If they didnt require some sort of gear (if you dont tie to the pilots gear) then ships become simple and almost pointless to "build up". Everyone will just have them all.
  • @Kyno You make a valid point. I guess waiting for ship ability mats and reinforcement material farming isn't really enough. Ship ability currency to level them was only scarce when I first started ships. Wishful thinking though I suppose.
  • Ships are just too much for me right now. I can't complete most of the ship challenges and I am lucky to stay in rank 200 in fleet arena. I am trying to work on my characters first because they are more important for me. You could just work on characters for a while and passively farm ship materials and then upgrade everything once you are done with your characters.
