the Cal Kestis kit

I'm fully aware everyone hates a fan-made kit. It's cringe and rarely well thought out with the actual game and development in mind.

However, I've never felt compelled to write this before, ONLY for this character. I've been sitting on this for a while and given that he may be around the corner, if I don't share it for the eyes of the developers and community to judge and inspire, I will forever regret it.

CG, feel free to take whatever you like from this (or not), it's your game and I rescind any ownership or intellectual property rights for the contents of this post:

CAL KESTIS - Light Side, Attacker, Jedi, Galactic Republic, Lost Jedi

Cal is an agile bladesman, who harries the enemy and uses speed and control to survive.

(Low Health and Protection, medium-high damage output - ideal mods: Potency, Speed, Health)

Basic - Dash Strike - Cal dashes to the target and attacks, dealing Physical damage and granting himself Speed Up for 1 turn.

(Animation based on his main in-game combo attack. Dashes forward and lunges, nice and clean. Grants himself Speed Up when assisting.)

Special - Slow - Cooldown 3 - Cal slows in an area before him, applying Daze and Speed Down to each enemy character. This ability does no damage and cannot be countered. Cal then immediately gains a bonus turn.

(Animation based on in-game ability, with focus on the animated effect on the enemy. In Fallen Order Slowed enemies have a haze to them, and a deep WHOMPF sound effect.)

-- no GIF for this, but you all know it:

Special (Zeta) - BD-1, A Little Help? - This ability has a different effect each time it is used, resetting after its third use.

The first time BD-1, A Little Help? is used, BD-1 scans the target enemy, dispelling Tenacity Up if present, and applying Target Lock and Expose for 1 turn. Cal gains 50% turn meter, plus 10% for each Galactic Republic ally present. (edited)

The second time BD-1, A Little Help? is used, BD-1 releases a stim, healing Cal for 50% of his max health if below 100% health, or 50% of his max Protection if at full health.

The third time BD-1, A Little Help? is used, BD-1 jumps into the enemy team and Overloads, dealing Special damage to all enemies and applying Shock. This ability cannot be countered and has +100% Defence Penetration.

(Zeta adds dispel Tenacity Up, Expose, Shock and 50% max Protection recovery.)

(Obviously needs the voice line "BD, a little help?" on the 2nd use of the Health Stim, and "What's that, BD?" on the 1st. "Now, BD!" on the 3rd?)

Unique - Agile Deflection - At the start of each of his turns, if Cal attacked in his previous turn, he gains Evasion Up until the start of his next turn (can't be dispelled or prevented). When Cal evades an attack, he has a 50% chance to reflect 80% of the evaded damage back at the attacker.

(Note: this means he would not gain Evasion Up after the first 2 uses of "BD-1, A Little Help?".
Would it be too much to have this lightsaber animation if the reflection triggers on evade?: )

Unique - Knowledge of the Zeffo - Cal has +30 Speed and +30% Offense. Cal has 100% counter chance against Empire characters.

If Cal is the only character on his team, he escapes the battle.

(Tune Offense as appropriate.)

It's a shame not to use more of the quotes ("I'm persistent." "I'll add it to the plan." "I'LL GIVE YOU A SHOW." But I wanted to keep the kit direct and honest to who the character was.

His kit is meant to showcase his personality and character. Fast, agile, efficient. It's unique and I believe true to the experience of playing Fallen Order.
The fleeing represents his surviving, and the plot of the game. He is a survivor, by nature.

I think he'd fill a super interesting position within GR Jedi, somewhat of a glass cannon like GMYoda but also with the evasion, fleeing and healing mechanics, essentially a character you'd want to avoid when buffed and kill the rest of the team as soon as possible before he kills you. Would be a great fit with GL Kenobi.

What do you guys think?

He was made a Jedi Knight in the game, so he's definitely a Jedi and not ufu

The BD thing fits thematically with stuff that BD does in Fallen Order, but the weird set of effects in no particular order would be incredibly unwieldy to use. It'd make more sense to just have it do one thing when targeting an enemy and another thing when targeting a friendly.

Also, having him escape again fits thematically with FO but doesn't really translate, as the only characters that escape when they're last man standing are noncombatants.

Not a jedi, not a galactic republic character, not a rebel, lightside force user would be his tag

There's no Rebel tag. I'm pretty sure he does count as a Jedi my guy. He's the main character of a Jedi game, he is a Jedi Padawan in every sense. The Jedi who survived Order 66 did not cease being Jedi - at least, in the OG canon as I know it. Hermit Yoda has the Jedi tag, after all. He was also GR and fought in the Clone Wars alongside his master.
  • I agree with @Itsa_me_Malario on removing the GR tag. After all, this version of Cal isn’t Galactic Republic.
  • Thank you for the feedback so far guys!

Agreed - I think the idea of having one ability with BD-1 that can do many different things would be super cool to have in-game. And if nothing else, I feel the stim animation and voice line is too iconic to not include.

What if he gained e.g. 50% turn meter after the first use? That would speed up the cycle and remove a lot of the penalty of using a non-attack. Also when BD-1 scans items in game, you tend to gain knowledge or gear as a result.

True. I wanted to convey that he's one of the few characters in Star Wars that is super-evasive and managed to survive the Purge mostly by running - unlike e.g. Kanan. I really wanted him to be a solo-buffing, inexperienced mix between GMY and Hermit Yoda in that regard.

Forcing an opponent to attack him and deal with the Evasions/damage reflection would make him way more powerful and satisfying to play with. You could swap that out - maybe for a bonus if the team is all Galactic Republic?
(If you play through the game, I always got a strong feeling that Cal was still a GR Jedi, and it was the Republic that had left him behind. I still stand by the GR tag! It's not like we'll get a younger version. I doubt we'll get many of the other JFO light side characters, and I don't think he thematically belongs under JKR personally.)

Quick thing about his Slow special. If it deals no damage, then it already can't be countered, so there's no need to add "This ability can't be countered" to it.

    Thanks - makes sense!

I also added some minor GR synergy to his 2nd special:

The first time BD-1, A Little Help? is used, BD-1 scans the target enemy, dispelling Tenacity Up if present, and applying Target Lock and Expose for 1 turn. Cal gains 50% turn meter, plus 10% for each Galactic Republic ally present.

To my mind this alleviates the issues with using the ability, while providing incentive for use with Padme, JMK or QGJ, which is where I think he belongs in-game lore-wise.

Cal spent the whole of Fallen Order trying to find his way back to the relative safety of his past as a Padawan and unearthing the torture of his experiences since - via BD-1 scanning items. To my mind, he is still a Galactic Republic era Jedi when the game takes place - and it's not like we'll be getting a younger version.
