Thoughts on CG and their approach to the player base that keeps them employed
I had a pretty angry post removed, which is fine, so I'm going to do my best to be as well spoken and respectful as possible, while still airing my grievances. I think it goes without saying that the recent update has more than upset the player base. This is supposed to be a FTP game, it is advertised as such, is labeled as such in app stores, etc...FTP = FREE TO PLAY. The addition of paywalls to previously free to play features is unacceptable, unethical, and in my opinion is completely against the spirit of gaming. Is this a mobile game, sure, but I would assume that if you are a part of these forums you invest some portion of your time to this game, possibly daily (if you want your free rewards, gear, crystals, etc, you better believe you are logging in daily). Time is invaluable, we are all allotted just a limited amount. The fact that we are willing to give our precious time to this game shows how important it is to the player base, as gamers, and as fans of the franchise. Some are here for the collecting of characters, some for the feel of the game, it doesn't matter, we all donate our time to this game.
I have no doubt that there are devs on the team who work hard to make sure we have a good experience. This is evident in the amount of time spent on character models, animations, landscapes, and a variety of other things. No doubt they are fans as well. I support those devs. I have never had a problem throwing a few dollars here or there at this game, because it was enjoyable, and it puts food on the table of the devs. Unfortunately, most of that money trickles up to the pockets of people who dont value my time. They dont feel like my time has any value, any worth. They see me (us) as means to line their pockets with more green. Just a statistic. Well statistics work both ways.
I propose an in game boycott of purchases. I don't think the game should be boycotted, as it is a good game at its core, but we should hit them where it hurts so they get the message. Helldivers 2 is a great example of how a gaming community can influence the companies that make these games (not ftp, but still a good example). Boycott the episode pass, boycott conquest, boycott card packs, boycott all in game purchases. I know most whales wont want to do this, and thats their perogative, but if enough FTP players refuse to add any money to the kitty it will still send a message, at least I think it would.
Fortnite is a prime example of the right way to do a FTP game. Give your player base a truly enjoyable game whether or not they are giving you money. Give them options to buy in, but dont take away from the experience. Don't alienate people based off of income level. Don't discriminate based off of whether or not they can boost your revenue by a point or two.
Whatever, I'm done blabbing. I'm not making any more purchases in this game.
