What about really, really hard solo events instead of tournaments

Like a solo heroic mini-AAT raid or super GW that changes slightly from event to event to release new toons. Takes a bit of planning, thinking, quite a few different teams and doesn't take 3 hours.

Seems more in line w what the game use to be. Gives something to work towards unlike tournaments which the vast majority will never place in ever due to the established players taking the very limited top spots.

  • really hard events have the same outcome as tournaments; a forum filled with complaints and unhappy people who think they're all getting screwed over personally. Can't wait for the militairy might event to go live (maybe it's super easy now with wiggs though)
  • With no aurodium packs and a system like this, the new toons would not be very "exclusive "....

I agree we need something other then the current setup, but they do need the result to be some sort of "exclusivity"
  • The point is that from a development point of view, the tournament is great. It's easy, infinitely repeatable and all they need to change is the rewards. To make a single "very hard" event requires development time and a LOT of playtesting to ensure the right level of difficult (with tournaments, approximately .02% of the population unlocks the character at 7*). And that labor has to repeated every time they want to release a new character in this format (or else people complain that the exact same event is used and it was *way too hard* the first time around as well, and why do the exact same people who farmed some obscure shitty characters like CUP and JKG get the OP new toon?).

So while from a player point of view, tournaments are quite shitty (although I still think some fairly easy tweaks could make them very enjoyable), from a development and content creation point of view, they are excellent. They are here to stay.
  • It could honestly be the same damn event - I think I read someone who recommended you hit 'start' and you have exactly 1 hour to do as many fights as possible and climb as many ranks. Then you're locked in. Clearly speed of the win might count as much as anything..

It's clearly not worth doing a tournament that takes the MOST amount of time in game and provides the LEAST reward for 99.5% of the players.
  • imo the biggest part of the problem with tournies... isn't the tourney themselves.. but rather what happens after.

If these characters were available in some sort of ready stable form... hard node for example then players wouldn't feel so shafted for not getting a toon that will be used against them (whose counter might only be the same toon).

Right now we have no clue how exclusive these characters will be so people panic and in some cases get locked out of arena competitions just because they didn't place in the tourney.

How is this any different from Chromium exclusive? I guess it affects the whales differently (they just buy chromiums, whereas tournaments are kinda one-off events), but for non-whales, tournament characters are just as unavailable as chromium exclusive. Deal with them the same way: accept that you cannot get them until in a few months they are available to all, and something else is behind a wall.
  • I was thinking of a mini AAT raid 50 times easier, but you get first place rewards.
I might be able to beat that.
(GK here I come, if that happened)
