- Not random. They are generally "better" if they require more shards to unlock, but really they just unlock at a higher star level. It still takes the same number of shards to build a 7* character, no matter how many stars they have at unlock.

Understood. I was asking because I was thinking of prioritizing unlocking the 80 shard characters first, then the 50, then 25, then 10.- Death Trooper unlocks at 25 shards.
So, no, it's not (necessarily) related. - Sorry, don't know anything about Death Trooper. Is it a strong character?
- Supposedly. I just unlocked him myself so I can't say for sure.

Ignore the shard requirements. Prioritize a team and unlock those characters.
As you progress in the game it won't really matter when you unlock, since as was stated they all need the same number of shards eventually anyways."DarthSurdious;d-154498" wrote:
Are the characters that require 80 shards to unlock more viable/powerful/useful than characters that cost 10/25/50? Or is it just randomized?
If it unlocks at 10 shards it unlocks at 1 star, 25 is 2 star 50 is 3 star 80 is 4 star but if it unlocks at 1 star it needs 15 more shards to progress to 2 star.
Every character is 330 shards in the end.- Capgasp said recently that it's roughly based on the character's importance, or something, so generics generally have a lower star unlock and main characters have higher. But that doesn't necessarily correspond to how good they actually are in the game.
- Just as an example death trooper is a very powerful character in an empire squad and viable at end game and unlocks at 2 star(25 shards)
Nute gunray on the other hand unlocks at 4 star(80 shards) and for the bulk of the game has been an almost useless character
To be fair part of this is due to power creep as death trooper is a much newer character but it's a solid example of examine the characters and their abilities to decide who to farm - Actually, most of the characters released since last February are unlocked at 2 or maybe 3 stars, unless they are legendary/Hero's journey characters. So even if it was important a while ago now it seems irrelevant.
