It may or may not have anything to do with your modding. We like to tell ourselves we did something right if our Nightsister team holds thrice, ignoring the fact that a guildmate's NS team with far inferior gear and mods did as well.
The reality of it as that a team defeated in one battle can help your guild more than one defeated in two. It all about what the other side had to expend, and if the enemy felt the need (or actually needed) to use a valuable team, that team can't be used again. The team defeated in two attempts by less valuable teams didn't prevent any high-power teams from being saved for use elsewhere.
That said, there is definitely some value to using some slightly unconventional teams or teams with significant variance in gear/relic levels. We get so used to having the same teams with the same members at the same gear/relic levels that we know exactly how to counter them. Throwing a curveball can force the opponent to have to make a less informed decision, and either underestimate or overestimate.
See below. I have no idea what teams were used to attack, but my guess would me the opponent(s) underestimated Z's ability to recover health, aided by Mission's DoTs, his own DoTs, and by protection gain from Qi'ra's lead.
