Force Max FPS to 60?

I've noticed when I have the camera locked to a sim as they move around it's very jittery compared to how smooth it used to be. I checked the in-game FPS and it's all over the place mostly in the 200s. I attempted to fix this within Nvidia Control Panel and setting Max Frame Rate to 60, but the game is not enforcing this. Also the Refresh Rate box in-game is empty and the game is stuck in borderless windowed. Even if I alt enter it then goes to regular windowed mode, but Refresh Rate is still empty.

Is there anyway to force the Max Frame Rate?

  • ArilyBoo  Did you choose the correct executable for Sims 2 when changing the Control Panel settings?  Alternately, if you set the Max Frame Rate to 60 under Global Settings, does it hold for Sims 2?  Even if you don't want to do this in general, it's a useful test to see whether the CP can control TS2 framerates.

Aside from that, you could try an outside tool like RivaTuner Statistics Server.  It does need to be running while you play, but it only affects programs for which you specify a setting.  Let me know if you need help setting it up, and be sure to restart your computer after you install it and before you test.

As for borderless mode, I'm not sure whether Windowed Borderless Gaming (free tool) works with Sims 2, but it does with Sims 3 and other older games, so it's worth testing as well.

This is the executable in the Control Panel:

I already have Borderless Gaming, but the issue is not getting into borderless windowed it's getting into Full Screen. I wanted to see if the game needed to be in Full Screen for the Max Frame Rate to work correctly. The Sims 2 Legacy by default is borderless windowed. At least for me.

I've already used the Control Panel to fix The Sims 3 Max Frame Rate, it's just not working with The Sims 2 Legacy. I didn't have this issue with The Sims 2 Ultimate so I'm sure it's however they optimized this newer version.

  • ArilyBoo  The idea of using Windowed Borderless Gaming, the outside tool, is that Sims 2 and the CP's fps limiter might behave differently in that context.  It does look like fullscreen at least, so it could be a good compromise here.

I would still like to know if setting a Global fps limit in the Control Panel affects Sims 2.  And if not, try RivaTuner and see how that goes.

So the Global Max Frame Rate didn't work either and it also didn't matter if the game was in borderless windows on it's own or using a borderless windowed app.

I'm not sure I want to install another app like RivaTuner either. I'm just not understanding why it's not responding with Nvidia Control Panel like it should be.

  • ArilyBoo  I'm not understanding either, and I don't know why this would be.  In past years, I remember that Sims 3 wouldn't always respect CP settings on a laptop with dual graphics because the iGPU's driver settings were winning out, so to speak, but that hasn't been a problem in a while and I don't even know whether you have a laptop.  I only have TS2 installed on a laptop with AMD graphics at the moment, and while could test on an Nvidia desktop, that's not relevant if the issue is dual graphics.

Do you own the Sims 1 legacy version, and does the CP's fps limit work there?  I don't remember seeing any reports of runaway framerates in that game, but I also don't remember how to check (other than with the Nvidia overlay or another outside app).  That game isn't necessarily a valid comparison either, as it was redone to use Vulkan, but it would be interesting to know.

I do not have dual graphics, but I do have an Nvidia Geforce RTX 4070 TI. I also have a desktop gaming computer not a laptop. I own The Sims 1 Legacy version as well, but haven't really messed with it to often so I'm unsure if it's having the same issues or not. Something I will have to look into. Like I said it's weird this wasn't an issue with The Sims 2 Ultimate. Only with Legacy and it's probably how they optimized it.
