My sim's child just disappeared...

So my sim and her kid were returning home from a community lot, and when I loaded them in, the child was gone!  He's no longer in the family or anywhere else. This is a naturally birthed sim too so I'm kinda upset that he's now gone after I spent hours in raising him. Is there a fix for this? Cuz it's really putting me off the Sims 2. :/
