Anyone else play with the Nraas Vector mod? + My experience
Just wondering if anyone else plays with this and what you think of it?
I've had this mod kinda lurking in my mods folder for awhile, I finally decided to figure it out and give it a proper test and I have to say It was both fun and frustrating. I think this is the hardest week in the sims I've ever had.
It all started when my eldest child got sick. I had to wait a full day (my family is just starting out, so very broke at the moment). The doctor diagnosed her with strain 4 Llama pox. I figured it'd be no biggy and followed the protocol I follow in the sims 4. I had her stay home from school, eat a nice meal and then sleep the day in her parent's room so her siblings can play without waking her up, fully expecting that by the next morning she would be well and I could ship her off to school.
How wrong I was on that! At some point during the night her mom developed symptoms and caught the llama pox herself, and spread it to her husband. Once bed time officially rolled around I had sent the eldest child back to the small bedroom she shares with her siblings. One by one, each toddler fell to the dreaded llama pox and in the course of one night my entire household had been infected.
I wasn't too worried about it even still, I've played both sims 2 and sims 4 with their illness and figured it couldn't possibly be any worse than that. Then the toddlers started to fuss. My eldest child was woken up repeatedly so I bought her a sleeping bag with my last $100 so she could camp out in the living room and get a decent night's sleep. She started crying after being woken up the 3rd or so time. It's sad, but she tends to cry a decent bit while being sick.
My sim parents didn't really show the full impact of their illness yet, and mom dutifully got up to console the toddlers in the morning so her husband could sleep for work. After she got the toddlers woken up, changed, and fed, she barely had any energy left. After her husband left for work I decided I'd stick the toddlers back in their cribs (they also were exhausted) and let her nap again, fully intending that once her energy levels picked up I'd have her get the house in order.
She sleeps clear through til dinner time and barely manages to make her energy climb up to be functional. I have her make a soup since everyone is sick and her exhausted husband helps get the three sick toddlers ready for bed. Again, I figured this won't be so bad,
That night the toddlers would. not. sleep. They woke up about once or twice an hour and cried, waking up their eldest sister in the process. Again, I just have her grab the sleeping bag and camp out elsewhere. By the next morning the parents are completely exhausted and seem to be full swing into their illness. The husband got one toddler up and fed before having to get ready for work and then mom got the other two. With mom's limited energy she only feeds the toddlers so I can hopefully get her to get the house in order. She accomplishes a decent amount but neglects the garden. Throughout this entire part of the illness both parents constantly forget what they were doing. It was so difficult to get them to function, but they trudged through.
Once the father gets home he feeds the kids again and orders a pizza. The parents are just done at this point. Once the toddlers are decently cared for they're put in bed early and the parents crash out around 7. Deciding everyone needs to a good sleep I lock every bedroom door so no one can escape and no one can go yell at the sick toddlers. This proves to be effective in keep everyone in their room and even helping in ignoring the toddlers crying, but the toddlers still don't sleep.
At this point, the parents are functioning in shifts. One parent will sleep until they pull their energy bar out of the red, and then once the other parent has a full red bar they'll tag out. I finally decide I just can't take this and list everything I think might be worth something in the consignment shop. Once I get the payment I buy the eldest child, and her mother and father an immuno booster to hopefully push them towards recovery (Unless I'm missing something I couldn't do much for the toddlers).
Getting towards the end of the week my poor family is just haggard, but starting to recover. I'm thinking "The light is there at the end of the tunnel! We're almost there guys!" Nope. It's a train. The father gets sick again and the eldest child after struggling so hard to overcome the llama pox and is just a few hours from being able to sleep in her own bed falls victim to a second illness. I feel terrible, but at this point my family is destitute and I just can't risk a new strain infecting the entire house. I make her some food but have her eat while everyone else is upstairs, make sure she's bathed and then lock her in the playroom with her sleeping bag. So instead of being able to sleep in her own real bed for the first time in nearly a week, she spends another night on the floor with her sleeping bag. The next morning as soon as her father leaves for work I dump everything I can into raising enough money for a baby sitter and at least one visit to the doctor. I finally get the eldest child to the doctor and get her immuno booster. After her fathers gets off work he spends most of the earnings from that day to get himself and immuno boost. My family now has $2 and mom has to do without.
Miraculously on this day, the twins enter recovery, and the third toddler is soon to follow. By the end of that night his illness breaks. As I'm writing this, it marks the first time in a full sim week that my household has slept through the night.
My garden nearly died because my sims were just too exhausted to care for their children, themselves, and their garden. I managed to keep it alive by having the parents sleep a good while and ignore the kids, then team up to save it.
TL:DR
Vector is what I have always hoped illness in the sims could be. A REAL challenge. This truly gave a simulation of managing a household that is just beat down by their illness. The family was consistently exhausted and forgetful, the children cried constantly because they were sick and I felt terrible for them, but I really loved the experience. I generally love all the nraas mods I download, but this mod has gone right onto my favorites list. Can't wait to try out the other illnesses!
