Issue launching TS3 64 bit & Metal on Mac

I’ve just installed The Sims 3 64 bit & metal on my MacBook Pro 2017 running on High Sierra (10.13.6). I’m running it through Origin as my OS isn’t compatible with the EA App. My Mac is compatible with Metal.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled only the base game and no packs. I’m still having the same issue when I click ‘play’ on Origin - the launcher opens but when I click play it just closes and returns to Origin.

Please can someone help?

Knowing you are on High Sierra 10.13.6 , which doesnt get any updates anymore and Origin being shut down on 17th April 2025 i would recommend you to upgrade to a higher OS version and switch to EA App and install it from there again

  • ag0197  Please list the full specs of your Mac: everything under About This Mac except for the serial number.  Please also let me know whether you'd be willing to update your OS, which you can absolutely do on a 2017 model.

If you want to test something in the interim, you can create a new admin account on your Mac and try playing there.  Don't link the account to your Apple ID (you can skip that step); just open Origin, repair Sims 3, and try to play.

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)

Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5

    Memory 8gb 2133 MHz LPDDR3

Graphics Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 1536 mb

What does updating the OS entail? I’d be happy to but it isn’t my laptop so I’d just want to make sure it’s fine to do that.

I’ll try your interim suggestions also. Thank you!

Thank you! I was thinking the same re Origin. What does upgrading to a higher OS entail please?

  • ag0197  If you want to update to a new OS, here's how:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/102662

Your model Mac can install anything up through Ventura (13.x).  The minimum requirement for the EA App is Catalina (10.15.x), which is also the first version of macOS not to support 32-bit apps.  So if you have any of those installed that you'd like to keep using, consider waiting to update.  Or you could install Mojave on an external drive and boot into that when you want to use your 32-bit apps.  Feel free to ask for help with this process if you're interested.
