Seeking advice: Should I install Sims 3 on Mac or Windows?
The Sims is my favorite franchise of all time. I was mesmerized by it as a middle schooler and I reminisce about it to this day. The Sims 3 is my favorite game. I haven't played it in years, and when I decided to play again a year or two back I realized it won't work on my 2016 MBP.
The past year I religiously followed the infamous 2020 chain on the 64bit Metal edition. Once it dropped, I decided to wait until the release is stabilized, as my previous experiences with the Sims 3 always followed a vicious cycle of me starting and loving the game > losing my latest save / having a corrupted file / lag > me quitting after being unable to find a solution
I also own a 2014 alienware PC that has been dusting in my closet. The Sims 3 actually worked decently well on it - I didn't really know how to use nraas Error Trap, never heard of the world routing lags- and I was still able to play the game for a long time before it eventually broke down.
The PC still runs, but I would wipe it and upgrade it (ram/graphics card/cpu) to give it a little more juice. Yes, I would do this for literally just this game.
I miss the Sims and the quarantine got me down. I want to play it again - but do my best to set it up in a way that I can enjoy it for a very long time.
Here are my questions:
- Is it worth trying to install 64-bit Metal edition on my MBP?
- Or should I just upgrade my alienware PC and not bother dealing with the mac version?
- For either path, are there any recommendations you can give me on stabilizing the game to prevent errors / lag? When it comes to installing expansion and stuff packs? Custom content? Mods? nraas and world routing?
- Are there guides / articles that you would recommend to help me on this journey?
Thank you lots.
@NiiChavo I personally don't enjoy playing the Mac version of Sims 3. Even though my laptop can handle it, the camera movement is choppy, some interactions are missing, and there are some weird graphics errors that take away from my enjoyment. Other people are reasonably happy, although I think we're all still hoping for some more fixes.
The most important question though is what hardware your Mac has. If it doesn't have a dedicated graphics card, as in, it's a 13" MBP with only integrated Intel graphics, then the game may not run well enough to meet your expectations, particularly if you like to play with Pets. A number of people with Intel chips have had to uninstall Pets, turn down a couple of graphics settings to the minimum, or both.
The game still runs fine on Windows 10, at least on sufficiently strong hardware. For your Alienware, if it has 8 GB RAM, you really don't need more unless you plan on multitasking. (But then you have a Mac that could be sitting next to you for that second-screen experience.) Your CPU upgrade options will be severely limited by the motherboard: Intel changes the socket every two years, so even a 2016 processor likely wouldn't work with a 2014 board. Graphics cards are much more flexible, provided you have a sufficiently strong power supply. On the other hand, new and new-ish GPUs are sold out almost across the board right now, unless you want to pay a 60-100% markup.
Anyway, if you want to talk specifics, let me know what hardware the Alienware has—processor, RAM, PSU, current GPU—and we can go through your options.
As far as getting the game running well, the same mods are recommended in both Windows and macOS. This is a good place to start:

The only EA worlds that have serious issues are Isla Paradiso and Bridgeport. IP is basically unplayable on any system unless it's edited; Bridgeport doesn't always need as much help, and the problems are mostly limited to elevators getting stuck and issues with how apartments are constructed. I can go into more detail if and when you'd like to play either world. There's no reason not to install the packs though, again provided the computer running them can handle the load. The content of each pack works fine in any other world.
