Sims 3 acting odd, missing sim portraits, no UI, and more

I have tried loading Sims 3 four times since I last played and I am having the following issues, regardless of what save file I load (however I can create a new family and things SEEM to be okay):

1) Load screen and music out of sync with actual load progression that is normal for my computer

2) no sim portraits once loaded (family of 5 +1 plumbot) (not empty portraits, no portraits at all)

3) stuck as one sim and unable to change to any other, cannot access cellphone to try and move

4) can switch to buy/build mode but choices wont stay selected

5) typing in resetSim in cheat mode doesn't effect anything

6) can change game speed, time passes and days change but nothing else actually happens

7)  sim UI doesn't load entirely (sim UI that does load looks the wrong color blue)

I tried loading all of my previous save files that were for different families and this happens to all of them.  I was able to create a new sim and everything seemed okay but I am not convinced this won't happen again, because it seems like there is something actually wrong with the game since the loading screens are out of wack even before loading a save file.  It takes the same amount of time to load but the progress bar gets to the end too fast and the music stops, then left staring at a loading screen with no sound until it decides to load.  The similar thing goes for the initial sims 3 loading screen with the comical loading messages and the icons, they don't synch up like they used to.  The only thing different that I can think of is that I sim ported my sim on a tour to a friend's town and I had never done that before.  Like I said though I tried loading my other save files with different families and they had the same issue.  I could not find any save files that had the .bad extension to them to see if any of them were corrupt.  I also checked the game cache and it appears to be empty.

What I want to know:

Is this a save issue or a total game issue?

Should I reinstall and copy my save games to try again?

How can I tell if there is corruption on my save if there is no .bad file and everything else seems to appear normal (to prevent it getting this far if that is the issue)?

It seems to me like a whole bunch of issues are happening at once and I am not sure where to start sorting them out.  My main concern is that even if I start a new save the problem will pop back up and I'd really like to keep my progression as I am into the 4th generation of the family on my main save.  Any help would be awesome.  And before you ask, yes I created multiple different saves while playing the main family  and tried loading those besides the others.   Thanks!

    From CYRI:

Windows Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Edition Service Pack 1 (build 7601), 64-bit

    Processor: AMD FX(tm)-8320 Eight-Core Processor

Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series

    Total RAM: 3.9 GB

    From Dxdiag:

    Memory:  8192 MB

    (8 GB)

I don't know why cyri says I only have almost 4 gigs unless it is running in a 32 bit version.  Anyway I exceed the requirements to run it by quite a bit.

I tried resetting it to factory default as per your suggestion and it *seems* to have fixed the problem for the game in general but that specific save file is still an issue.  I went back to a much ealier save and it ran just fine though.

Am I correct in guessing this suggests my save file has been corrupted for quite some time and just finally got too bad to run?

I would like to understand what some of the signs of file corruption are that are not as obvious as missing sims, etc. as until this happened I had no idea there was a problem.  For instance, in moonlight falls I could not get the architech desk to work, was that a bug or an indicator my file was corrupt or was it specific to that town?  Island Paradise runs really badly- play a few seconds, pause , play again- is that a sign of corrupt file too or a problem with Island Paradise?

It is hard to tell what is a bug and what is file corruption!

I guess I am lucky that one of my older files still worked (still a LOT of catch up to do) but I am still not convinced I won't have this problem again after several hours of play- I still have no clue what the cause is or how to avoid it.  Thanks!!!

I am so thrilled that it seems to be working (if still a bit disppointing because of having to redo your progress).

I must be honest, I'm not that tech savvy or knowledgeable, so I can't really say how you would know that. I can only advise you to make backups on a regular basis.

Island Paradise is know for its lagging, I assume you are referring to actually playing in Iselo Paradiso? Here is a list that you can use to try help that: (thanks to Crinrict):

    • Sims in Slow Motion
    • Delete the Scott Family
    • Use the cheat DiscoverAllUnchartedIslands to make all islands visible. I'm aware that this takes away from the fun but it seems to help some.
    • Make sure you have no stuck sims in your town (use the cheat resetsim * to reset all sims in your town and put them to a safe location)
    • Use Overwatch and ErrorTrap (those are mods and you'll be using at your own risk. Not supported by EA. Just google to find)
    • Check for any aboandonned boats in your game and delete them by using testingcheatsenabled true and then shift-click on the boat and choose object-delete.
    • If you're playing Hobart's Hideout, be aware of this issue: Routing Issues in the Resort Hobart’s Hideout
    • General tips for lags: Lags & Intermittent Freezes

Just remembered, please accept a solution! XP is always welcome 😕mileyhappy:

Thanks, I will try that out- I can never remember how to spell the town's name so I just call it Island Paradise lol.  It  does seem like there must have been something wrong with Sims 3 as well because the reset to factory default seems to have improved perfomance as well.  Thank you for answering so quickly.
