Sims 3 Umiversity Save Issue

Every time I send my Sim to University, I go back to her home lot and she is still there. I keep going back to send her siblings since financial aid will not multiply for the number of Sims being enrolled.

I tried deleted the University package and NHD files, but no luck. It's kinda like the home lot and the University are 2 different families completely, it's not saving as if my sim moved out.  Anyone had this issue or know how to fix it?

Also, if I just save (not 'save as') the home lot disappears completely. Never had that happen before.

@jilljill1124  Okay, two things.  First, if you're switching to the pre-University save on the Main Menu, then of course your sim is still there, because you saved before she left for University.  The "save as" creates a new save file, and the older one remains in its previous state.  Within the University save, there's no reason from what you've described to think this sim actually has a double.

Second, when you switch saves from the Main Menu, you introduce data from the first save into the second.  Even if those two saves were originally the same, you can still corrupt the entire save that way.  When switching from one save to another, you really do need to quit to desktop first.  It's also a good idea to delete the five cache files in your Sims 3 user data folder in Documents\Electronic Arts, just to keep any of that data from crossing saves as well.  For reference, the five cache files are:

    • CASPartCache.package
    • compositorCache.package
    • scriptCache.package
    • simCompositorCache.package
    • socialCache.package

If you load the save from before your sim traveled to University, you "save as," you play her forward through the term, and you send her home, there should not be a double.  But it's still possible for the travel transition to go badly in either direction.  When that happens, quit to desktop without saving and try again.  Let me know if it repeatedly doesn't work.

  • @jilljill1124  I'm not sure exactly what you're describing.  University works like a vacation world: time stops, and the homeworld looks exactly the same when your sims return as when they left.  Sims don't move out, they take a trip to university and return to their original households.  So it's not like the two worlds can be observed in parallel; while one is being played, the other is in suspended animation.

How are you traveling back home when you see your sim there, as in, what specific steps do you take to get back to the homeworld?  Do you use mods?  If so, please list them (unless they contain adult content), but don't link them.

Deleting the .nhd file within your save folder doesn't really do anything if it's the first time any sim in that save has traveled to University—the game just spawns a new unaltered copy the next time you go.  I doubt the game is spawning a corrupt file over and over.  The same goes for the university ExportDB.package file, if that's what you're deleting—there's nothing useful in there until you've saved with a sim in the world.

When you save and the home lot disappears, is it the home lot in the homeworld or the lot you've chosen for your sim to live in while at University?  Either way, that's unusual and may mean that the travel transition is breaking.  There are ways to help prevent that, but the first question is what you're trying to do when it breaks.

By the way, if this whole mess is all due to the financial aid issue, is there a reason you can't save yourself a headache and just cheat your household's money to what you think it should be?  I understand the answer is often yes, there's a reason, but that would be the simplest solution if you were willing to do it.

When I am going back home, I just save as on my sim in University and go back home

I was concerned because once my sim is done college, will a duplicate of her go to the home lot? Or is the versiom of her at the home lot replaced with the version who has the degree when she returns?

When I have played before, I would save my sim that was at the University, but the home lot was still available to play without that sims.

Also, its not really a financial thing. I just got all their skills up so they had full scholarships lol.

@jilljill1124  I was asking how you traveled back to the homeworld because there are a few different ways, depending on whether you have mods or not.  If you're saying that you send your sim home, as in, you tell her to go back to her homeworld, and there's a duplicate of her, then yes, the travel transition likely broke.  That's not a state you should play forward—anything like that, and your only good option is to quit without saving.

The fact that saving (not with "save as") doesn't work also makes it sound like something broke on the initial trip.  The travel transition can break in either direction, and although it's usually obvious right away, something like this could happen when your sim leaves but be obscured until she returns home.  This is one of many reasons it's great to always have backups of any save.

There are ways to reduce the risk of errors with traveling, mostly steps you can take to lower the stress on the game engine during the transition in the hopes that it loads everything smoothly.  But the approach with the highest likelihood of working is to add a few mods that directly address the problems with traveling.  Let me know whether you're interested or not, and either way, I'll post some recommendations, either for mods or for lowering the demands of the travel transition without them.

I hadnt traveled with her back home, I was wondering if when she graduated the versiom with a degree would replace the version that is at the homelot without since they are not parallel.

Her university home was a separate save, so I would go back to the main menu to the homelot.

Ive been having little glitches the past couple days, so who knows.
