Sims 3 will not install - only "play" option. [Mac]

Been trying for a week now to install my Sims game onto my computer - been through lots of online help chat's and still nothing.

  • Origin ID: becciboodles
  • Are you opted into the Origin Beta? Yes
  • OS X version: 10.9.5
  • Processor, Memory and Graphics card information: 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB graphics
  • Expansions you have/have active: None. Haven't downloaded Town Life Expansion Pack yet.
  • Any error message received: "Unknown error occured"
  • A detailed description of what is occurring: Trying to install Sims 3 from Origin, but it only has the option to "Play" to which the error message appears... as I have obviously not installed it yet. It has been installed on a previous laptop.
  • A detailed description of any troubleshooting you have already attempted: Repairing Disc Permissions, Uninstalling and Reinstalling both Origin and The Sims 3 game, Running CCleaner.

    Hi

Sometimes the download or installation fails. This can be for a variety of factors, including your internet connection dropping out during the download. Sometimes this can result in an awkward situation in which Origin acts as though the game is installed correctly. This means you can’t play the game, but nor will Origin let you re-download it. You cannot easily “uninstall” the game, because of course it isn’t there.

There are two things you can try.

1.Go into Applications on your Mac's hard drive and look in the folder called “The Sims 3”. This is the location from which your game actually launches (as opposed to a similarly named folder within Documents, which is where your saves and other data are stored). In the folder in Applications you will see the shortcut icons for the base game as well as any expansions or stuff packs installed. If you can see the icon for the game that has failed to properly download from Origin, try right clicking on it and this should give you the option to show the original file. You can move the original files to the trash from there. This may allow you to commence a re-download from Origin. (Many thanks go to Tremayne from TS3 Mac forum for this suggestion.)

    2. Look in Preferences in the Origin client and find the game installers. Delete the files relating to TS3. Log out of the client, then back in, then you may be able to start redownloading.

See if either of those work.

Thank you Caspinwall for your suggestions - I'm afraid neither worked. 😕mileysad:

OK. When you look in Origin, does the base game still have just the "Play" option - you can't restart the download?

If in Origin it still says "Play" then there is something in Preferences that needs to be reset so that you can try to download again. If you cannot find the setting yourself then you may need to contact EA Customer Services for further help or to reset it for you.
