Variation on Pressing Play Does Nothing

As advised, I'm starting my own thread on this glitch. Here's a copy-and-paste of my posts from that thread:

  1. What is your operating system ?
    Windows 7
  2. When did it start happening ? Installation of an EP ? Patch ? Windows Update ?
Installation of game, then installation of patch
  3. Do you use the download version, the dvd or a mix of both. If it's download, is it Steam or Origin
    Download version, via Origin
  4. Do you have any other programs open while you try launching the game. If so, please state which ones
I've closed out everything, even turned off anti-virus
  5. What's your AntiVirus program ?
    AVG
  6. What's your firewall (if you don't use any, it's most probably the Windows built in one) ?
    Windows built in, I guess.
  7. Do you have any kind of DVD/CD Emulator installed, like Roxio, Nero, Alcohol or anything along these lines.
    No.
  8. Does bypassing the launcher work: http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-3/FAQ-Troubleshooting-Steps/td-p/714/ ?
    No.
  9. Anything else you like to share
Initally had Sims3 for Steam, and purchased Supernatural via Oirigin.  Initally could not get anything to run at all, getting the "could not connect to dowload manager" error.  I uninstalled all downloads (both Steam and Origin) and re-downloaded Origin, Sims3, and Supernatural while Anti-Virus was disabled.  Still got error.  So I found and downloaded the Superpatch.  Now, the Sims start-up screen opens, but when I hit start, nothing happens.  The start up screen disappears, and -according to Task Manager- no programs are running.

Addt'l info, if this is relevant:

-Originally, Sims3 and After Dark were loaded via Steam to a different terminal.

-Ran Sims3 and After Dark just fine via Steam on this terminal using the same product code.

-Supernatural (loaded via Origin) runs fine on original terminal

-After attempting to download Supernatural on this terminal (again with same product code)l, none of the above run.

"Do you still have any steam version install or is all through Origin now ?"
After double checking, the original shortcut icon from the Steam version is on the desktop, but when clicking on it to play, it gives the install screen.

    So, I

    - Uninstalled Steam and Origin

    - Used the program seach to make sure every last vestige of both programs was gone

    - Temporarily disabled AVG

    - Reinstalled Origin.

    - Reinstalled Sims3.

    - Installed the Superpatch.

    - Ran Sims3 to see if it would actually do anything.

    - It was slow to initially run, but...

    - "Qap'la!!"  (Klingon for "success!")

    - Exited Sims3 prior to creating a character.

    Awhile later, I

    -Tried to re-enter Sims3

    - Nothing.

    - "maybe it's just slow, like before?"

    - Reinstalled Supernatural

-Start up screen loads, but when I try to start, the hourglass goes for a few seconds, then

-Nothing.  Even the task manager says there's nothing running or trying to run.

I've tried it with and without AVG being disabled, with and without Origin running in the background, all the same results.
