#BnS102 - The Hawthorne Project Part VIIII

“Local Philanthropist and Old Time Movie Starlet Passes Away.”

“Ms Emmeline Hawthorne passed away peacefully at her home last night. Ms Hawthorne was quite the startle back in Starlight Shores during the roaring 20’s. At 110, she was Willow Creek’s oldest resident. As far as we are aware, she leaves no family with which to bestow her substantial legacy and we expect this to be handed over to the residential housing initiative The Hawthorne Project with which her name has become synonymous.”

Stunned, you sit back in your chair, you can feel tears welling behind your eyes, but you put it down to the harsh sunlight blinding you and you raise your hand to shade your eyes. You can’t quite believe that Ms Hawthorne has actually died. You, mistakenly, thought she would outlive everyone in this town through sheer strength of will. You can’t help thinking of her illegitimate son, who has no idea that his birth mother has passed away. But, you were sworn to secrecy, so there is nothing that you can do, only hope that Kieran will somehow be remembered in her will in some small way.

As you sit lost in thought a ping from your laptop brings you back to the present.

You look at the sender's address, The Hawthorne Project.

Warily, you open the email, unsure as to what will happen to, perhaps, the favourite part of your job. What you read next sends shivers down your spine.

“My Dear,

It seems that I have passed on from this world, I asked dear Mammy to ensure that you receive this note on my death.

I wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for your help in soothing an old woman’s conscience. Watching the homes go up for all those poor souls who so badly needed a second chance in life has greatly lifted my spirits, I can tell that your Grandmother would have finally been proud of me as well.

The Hawthorne Project must continue long after I am buried and forgotten about. And no, I need no consolitary words that I will always be remembered, I know how fickle people are. As long as The Project is remembered and revered, I will be happy. So, I have instructed my attorney to adjust my will and leave half of my estate to you, on the proviso that you take over the running of The Project. There is no one else I could trust to carry on with this project the way in which we envisioned it..

You will be pleased to know that I have left provisions in my will to ensure that Kieran and his family are well looked after, I am still not willing to be completely honest, but now that I am gone, I don’t get much say in the matter do I? If my dear boy does find out the truth, I know that I can trust you to be there for him and his family, and that you can try to explain to him why I made the most difficult decision of my entire life, the day I decided to give his father up for adoption.

Well, I trust that you have a vast amount of work to do, I believe that there is another well deserving client awaiting your help. So goodbye my dear, live your life to the fullest, enjoy each and every day and don’t miss out on any opportunities for fun!

You sit back in your chair, truly stunned this time. There are thoughts whizzing around your head and you have no idea what they are, where they came from or indeed what to do with them. You go to press the intercom to ask Karl to come in, before realising that you are at home and that Karl is at least 5 kilometers away. Your mind is still whirling when you notice the attachment that was appended to the email. Opening it you see the details of the next Hawthorne Project recipient.

Please tell us a little bit about yourself, and your family if appropriate, and why you are applying to The Hawthorne Project.

Dear Hawthorne People,
My name is Harvey Wallbanger and I used to work as an apartment superintendent in San Myshuno. Yah, I know, you think I was named after a drink, but that is not the case. My family has been in the apartment superintendent maintenance business for years, and the name "Wallbanger" is our trademark because we are always banging on the walls, fixing things with our hammers and fiddling with electrical things. I really didn't want to follow in my family's footsteps. I wanted to branch out, be a rebel, but when I found out you got a free furnished apartment, heck, I was in!

Life was good. Oh yah, in my younger years, I was known as quite the ladies man. In my blue tux, I was a head-turner. I still have that blue tux and wear it sometimes when I go out to some fancy, smancy restaurant, and I am still a head turner, although I often hear sims chuckling when I walk through the door. Youngins', they know nothing. Well, what I was trying to say was that the ladies loved me, but I never found that "someone special"..know what I mean. I kind of wanted to give all the gals a chance at me, you know. So, yes, I am still single and available. I know, hard to believe.

Well, everything was going great, I had worked for the Llamarcins apartment building for nearly 30 years. Yep, count them. 30 years at one job! Can you believe it? All the neighbors just loved me and were always bringing me things, like gourmet fruitcake, to thank me for rescuing their goldfish from the toilet, you know, normal things superintendents do. Well, then I get this letter the other day, that the Llamarcins apartment building was going to be sold to some highfalutin bigshot who is going to renovate all these old, historic apartments into modern, new condos. And, get this, they don't want me to be part of the "new" look. They said I was dated....more like stale dated.

So, here I am nearing retirement with no job, nowhere to live, no one to give me gourmet fruitcake and no furniture even. I have no idea what to do. I've tried to find a new job, but even though I have years of experience, they all want someone "younger", more hip and with-it and computer literate with their new fangled on-line security systems. So, I am writing to you, dear Hawthorne People for help.

Tell us about your ideal home space:
You know I've been thinking that maybe down south in one of those "over 55" retirement communities would be ideal. You know what I mean...be in charge of a mobile home park. One level. I have had it with stairs and elevators. And decorate my outdoor space like I want with a plastic flamingo or 2. Yah, that's the ticket. There are always sims needing some help with something and I heard that there are a lot of lady sims living in these places just looking for a single, handy guy like me. Maybe it's time for me to settle down. Oh yah and those places have community centers right in the complex, too, with things like card games, and dances, and even bar-b-qs. Can't remember the last time I had a bar-b-q 'cause of the fire code, they weren't allowed in apartments. And movie nights under the stars...with an outdoor big screen tv...I can see it now...just like those drive-in movie theatres I used to love. Ahhh....that would be the life. Well, thanks for reading and I hope you can help me. Park benches are getting awfully hard to sleep on.

THE BRIEF


Create an over 55’s retirement complex on one with at least 5 units (3 doubles and 2 singles)
Each apartment/trailer must have the usual Hawthorne Project accoutrements; chess table, PC, piece of fitness equipment (not a yoga mat), easel and one musical instrument.
Harvey’s apartment/trailer must have flamingos in the yard
Ensure that there is a community center on the lot, with card game, somewhere to dance, BBQ and a setup for watching movies under the stars.
There must also be a community garden for growing fruits, veggies and flowers.

BUDGET: Your budget is §600,000 (including the lot cost)


Room Challenge:

Create Harvey's trailer, see this tutorial for making 'apartments', i.e. being able to upload more than one room as one room. Your budget for the room challenge is §50,000.

TL;DR - I had distinct personalities for the residents of each trailer in mind as I built and decorated them.
As well as Harvey, there's Mina and Trevor Wallace, a couple who have been married for 48 years and are still very much in love - they just want their own trailer and their own space now that they're retired and both at home all day! Mina likes gardening (she's been looking after Harvey's garden, since she can't bear opening her curtains in the morning and seeing a messy lot). Trevor likes fishing (Mina HATES the smell of fish).
Then there's Ricky Finnsbury. He's not great at looking after his trailer, but he is great on the DJ decks. Shame the other residents don't share his taste in music!
Maggie and Millie Taylor are sisters who live in the last trailer. It's big... but it might not be quite big enough for two people who are so different, especially when one's a neat freak and the other.... isn't. At all.

ENTRY DETAILS: Harvey has gotten his wish, and he now lives and works in sunny Windenburg at Flamingo Crossing Park! Due to new technology, all trailers are secured below ground level, so there are no stairs to hinder Harvey or any disabled Sim! He has added responsibilities, but his new home has plenty of perks because he was given the model/admin trailer. And this is only the beginning phase of the park, which is slated to hold nearly 30 trailers in all. Harvey will have plenty of ladies to "help."

ENTRY DETAILS: I thought trailers at first and then an idea struck me why not join trailer-like units together connected by a common area...under a dome. To make it look right I made seven units and then the fun began. The yards were a trip and find a place for the community garden, BBQ and movies were fun too. The rolls I used on the two separate walls out front may drop to the ground and the columns there disappear. Grrr. BUT It all came together and took longer than I thought (maybe trailers was a better idea?)
Oooops no inside close ups...oh well. Too late for that.

ENTRY DETAILS: Okay. I wanted to keep the park colorful and fun yet updated and sophisticated. Every pull behind trailer has its own yard and bbq area and matching landscaping. Community Center has everything required plus some extras like a pool and kids room. Trailer one belongs to _______, I designed it with a softer tone to attract future girlfriends and match the flamingos. I tried to keep the crisp, clean, modern look throughout the park. Trailer 2 belongs to a single mother with a teen daughter. I have created these sims and hope to load them. The way they look gives good insight to their design. Both mom and daughter like to dance, along with everyone living in the park. Trailer 3 is my personal favorite! It belongs to a young, eclectic couple, The Taylors! Trailer 4 belongs to Jason, who's older sister lives in trailer 5. He is a hooligan criminal and she is a sweet, romantic that loves to cook. Her kitchen has the best of appliances. Large community garden is behind her pull behind. Wish I could write more but I'm down to the wire on this one, my pics aren't even done loading, I've worked non stop to finish things up and I'm exhausted!

DETAILS: I can't believe I finished this!
So this is my lot with retirement community trailers and me and my niece are working on filling up newcrest with just normal trailers. So one big trailer park at the end
Because the Hawthrone Project requires certain things to be added I thought that the trailers probably look similar. So I designed a trailer layout. Every resident is allowed to change the floor and wall slidings/colors.
Captain Davey North and his wife Bay - Ma'am Bay, she insists - live in the first trailer. They decided to move to this trailer park after Captain North came home from sea for good. To ensure he would still feel like he is close to the ocean, Bay added water features in front of the porch. The anker next to the front door is a replica of the one from Captain Norths last ship. The couple likes to go fishing - all those fish in their kitchen are from their own collection.
Lady Eleanor van Berger lives next door. She is originally from Great Britain, where she grew up on a large estate. The lady thought she had married advantageously, but it turned out that her husband left her in debt when he died. She sold their mansion and used the remaining funds to furnish this little trailer to her specifications. Of course, only the best for her cats!
Mikkii is a passionate painter, but also dabbles in woodworking. He also has a slight case of dementia, so most of his art remains unfinished - like the two paintings that were supposed to go onto the kitchen wall. His daughter made sure he had a room just for his paintings and lots of easels all over the place.
Pistol Pete is an old school cowboy, that still goes out and rides his horses. To that effect he has a personal gym in his trailer. The inside is done in lots of wood to remind him of those little shacks he used to sleep in in the field. On the outside one can clearly see that Pistol Pete is more interested in spending time with a guitar at the campfire than in gardening: lots of rocks and desert plants ensure he doesn't have to do any upkeep.
Gnomina Meier and "that young guy" live in the trailer with, you guess it, a lot of gnomes in the front yard. Nobody knows Gnominas real name and she isn't talking about the identity of "that young guy". Trailer park residents know that there is only one bedroom in her trailer, so speculation and gossip is rife.
Luna and Duke Havaneser are the final two residence of this part of the trailer park. They breed the little dog breed Havaneser. One can recognize their trailer mainly because of the full-blown dog agility course in their front yard. Inside their trailer there is a room just for the dogs - done in tiles so if their dogs have puppies the room is easy to clean. Luna is the one that loves the colour yellow, so that is the main one in the trailer.
Harvey Wallbanger is the superintendent of this part of the trailer park. You can find his three flamingos in the front yard. He is barely able to keep his front porch and kitchen clean, so don't step into his bedroom/bathroom. However, he takes his lady friends into his own cinema and that usually works for impressing them. The only thing Harvey keeps in meticulous order are the residents files right next to his entrance door.
There are various public areas for older residents: a community garden, a pool with a ramp, an outside cinema and a community cafe with a coffee bar for daytime use and a dance floor for nighttime use.
Note: I playtested most of the sports/music/art items and they should all work.

ENTRY DETAILS: Sunny Palms RV Park is a mobile home retirement park for those sims 55+. Harvey Wallbanger was fortunate to be placed here by The Hawthorne Project after he lost his job, his apartment, well, everything. So, now he lives in his own trailer and does maintenance work for the other residents. Since coming here, he is a changed man, partly because of his great neighbors. His portion of the trailer park has 5 unique trailers, one specially designed for #simswithdisabilities. There is also a community center with an outdoor pool. The residents are all gearing up for a special event in their newly opened movies under the stars park. Harvey hopes you will be able to join them for a special dedication and rare film showing.

#BnS103 - Dream A Little Dream

You walk through the main office doors and can’t help but think of how much Karl would love this! The reception area is just the thing he’s always wanted. He doesn’t know you know, but you know he secretly has always wished for this or that to make his job here easier, and this set-up has it all.

There is ample seating for clients, and a wonderfully large conference room for you to take meetings in. It’s… you didn’t even know it was what you wanted until you stood looking at it in awe.

You have to see your office! You look around, opening doors until you find the one that must be yours, and like everything else you’ve seen, it is perfect. So much so you wonder how anyone could ever have built such a thing. It doesn’t even seem real.

You are about to go see the last thing, the most important thing, the thing that you want to see more than anything when the intercom buzzes, waking you from your sleep.

You sit up and rub your eyes, blinking as you look around at your real office, the perfect one of your dreams lingering in your mind’s eye.

The intercom buzzes again and you finally answer it.

“Yes, Karl?”

“Well, we’re pretty slow, no clients on the schedule. I was wondering if I might take off early.”

“Oh. Yes, of course. Before you do, can you come in here for a moment?”

“On my way,” he says.

You grab a pencil and paper and begin to furiously draw everything you can remember from your dream. After all, business has been more than good lately, and you are feeling like maybe you’ve outgrown this place.

When Karl pokes his head in you look up and grin. “Karl, how would you like to have a new office?”

ENTRY DETAILS: The ground floor consists of reception area & “meet and greet” the potential clients. On the first floor, there’s a conference room for meeting & presentation area, VIP room for the high-profile clients, and 2 bathrooms. On the second floor, there’s an office and a canteen (sunroof) for the staffs to refresh as well as to entertain the clients. The studio/workplace is located on the top floor (sunroof) with balcony and a small rooftop garden. A small café is located at the back of the building, that can be accessed from the ground floor, which is what I always wanted if I have my own building (because I love coffee so much). The 2 fountains and the sculptures are placed to add the whimsical sense to the building, which reflect the owner.

ENTRY DETAILS: Bright Night Offices is a wonderful group of offices. There are some shelves in the Executive Office with some extra space. Karl gets his own office for slow days or if you decide to hire a different receptionist. There are 4 decorated desks for extra employees (I would imagine that with this big office you would have more employees so you could work on more projects). There is stuff there for an office cat (which I feel the employee with all the cat stuff would have brought in) such as many resting spots, a cat bowl, and a litter box in the executive bathroom.

ENTRY DETAILS: How do you do a dream office on a budget?? This is how I do it, at least. Modern, crisp, combining concrete with natural woods, with bright color accents and lots of natural light. A converted factory with both industrial and contemporary elements... I wanted this office to be in an industrial setting, so I chose the docks of Brindleton Bay. The backstory is that this was a former bread factory that I have converted into office space. The offices retain many industrial elements that have been incorporated into the design. Exposed brick and industrial piping show the factory history of the lot while floating stairs, glass elements and contemporary furnishings give a modern twist.
The special touch that I have always wanted is a wine cellar. This feature is found in the basement "executive apartment" (for out-of-town clients or when I need a place to crash), and contains many hand crafted vintages from Champs Les Sims and around the world.

DREAM A LITTLE DREAM ~ From The Ground Up ~
Newly developed office building in Uptown San Myshuno. The building has been designed for and by the architects at the highly appraised architectural firm ‘From the ground up’. As all of the employees have a severe passion for coffee (some might say unhealthy addiction), of course a coffee shop is included, and espresso machines and coffee makers are to be found on each floor.
This office building is made like building blocks – in different colors (white, grey and blue). It's a modern building, and it suits the surrounding uptown area perfectly. The building is placed on a lot with the most perfect outlook over the city, and the architects really had this stunning view in mind when they designed this house, as there are patios on each floor – some floors more than one.
Layout
Ground floor: Reception, back office (Karl’s office), coffee shop, toilets. From the back office, there’s a private elevator going to the management offices on the top floor. From the coffee shop, there’s access to a large patio with ocean view, furnished with high tables and a foosball table.
First floor: Offices, break room, toilets. Access to patio with seating.
Second floor: Conference floor. Conference room, small lounge area with kitchen and espresso machines. Toilets. Access to three patios.
Third floor: Management floor. Manager’s office including kitchen facilities, espresso machines and coffee maker. Private toilet. Meeting room. Access to large patio with seating.
Build includes elevators to all floors. One elevator is private for the management. This can be accessed on the ground floor only via the reception back office (Karl’s office).
My special addition: Coffee. Lots and lots of coffee! In-house coffee shop. And espresso machines and coffee makers all over the place!

#BnS104 - Unexpected Arrivals

The deadline for this challenge is 10th October 2018


They certainly are a large family. Of course you had heard the news, so tragic - both parents dying in a car accident, and four orphans left behind! Their estranged aunt and her wife had agreed to take them in, so they wouldn’t have to be separated, but two twin babies, an eight-year-old, and a teen are a lot to take on for new parents!

“Of course we never expected to be unexpected parents,” Saanvi, the aunt, says. “Couples like us really don’t have that issue.”

“We’re very happy to do it,” Luna quickly adds. “But we’re very cramped in our place, now. “Ayla and Aesha share our bed, but Nila and Faisal are sleeping on the couches, and that just won’t do forever.”

You nod sympathetically. “I understand completely.”

“We love our house,” Saanvi says. “And the view. We don’t want to move, so we’ll have to add-on three new rooms, and probably another bathroom.”

“It should complement the existing architecture as well,” says Luna. “But we’d love to have the interior updated while we’re making so many changes. Make it more friendly for the amount of people in it.”

“And we want Nila and Faisal involved in their rooms,” Saanvi continues. “This is going to be as much their house as ours, I want to help make them feel as if they really belong there.”

You nod and turn to Nila first, the middle sister. “Hello, Nila,” you say.

She turns red and hides behind her hands, but with some gentle coaxing from Saanvi, she returns your greeting.

“Why don’t you tell me a little about yourself? Do you have any hobbies? Anything you like to do for fun?”

“I like to paint,” she says.

“Oh? And what do you paint?”

She shrugs and goes quiet.

“She’s shy,” Luna offers as Nila shrinks into her. “She seems to really like browns and pinks together.”

You decide to let Nila off the hook and turn to Faisal. “And what about you?”

He doesn’t look at you but softly says, “I- I really like my telescope.”

“Me, too,” you say, hoping to draw him out a little more. “I love looking at the stars.”

He looks at you, not expecting that. “Yeah. I- I want to find a new one and name it.”

“Oh? That sounds wonderful. What would you name it?”

“Paavai,” he says.

You remember that name from the news article. It was the mother. “That’s very beautiful.”

He nods.

“What about color? What colors do you like?”

He thinks a bit longer about that before saying, “I guess yellow. Or… maybe purple.”

“We’d like the babies to have a few things to help them develop their skills as they grow,” Saanvi says. “I’d like their room to be in a soft shade of green or blue.”

“I like the colors in our room now,” Luna says, “but something new and fresh would be nice.”

“I think this should all be very doable.”

“Since you’ll be working on the whole house, we’ll be taking a vacation for a few weeks,” Saanvi says. “So we won’t be around for questions during the renovation. I hope we’ve given you enough to go on?”

“I think I’ve got all I need,” you say. “The house will be move-in ready by the time you come back!”

“Thank you so much,” Luna says. “This is such a burden off us.”

“I am only too happy to help,” you say, already deciding to waive your fee for this one. You have every confidence that this new family will be able to overcome their tragic beginning and thrive in their new house.

The final build should have at least four bedrooms decorated per the requests and interests of the family as indicated above. Also, take into consideration items from the existing building for things Saanvi and Luna enjoy.
The exterior style of the house should reflect the current style, but the interior can be redesigned to give a fresh feeling and to make the best use of the existing spaces.
Don't worry about adding on the lot cost to this one, they already own it.

We used the colours the two older siblings said they liked most and made sure they had room for their activities. The kitchen is our favourite area and so far the family are enjoying that shared space the most. ENTRY DETAILS: I wanted to modernize the home, but still keep the general shape of the home. I added a wraparound-porch while I bulldozed the upper balcony. I expanded several spaces, downstairs and upstairs. I moved the kitchen to the back of the first floor to get a nicer layout. I also expanded it with the thought that maybe the whole family could fit in there, and make many nice meals together. I made a hallway, a new bathroom and a laundry room downstairs. The living room is kinda open plan, and leading to a spacious dining room.Both the living room and the dining room has space for all family members. I reserved the 2. floor to the bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. I kept the beige tones in the master bedroom, but "glammed" it up a bit, and also made it feel more relaxing and airy. I added some flowers for a cozy and beautiful vibe.
NB! I did not include all the bathrooms because they're all pretty much the same.

ENTRY DETAILS: As much of the original insides that matched the style of the house was kept, such as the kitchen counters. Other items were upgraded with child-friendly versions, such as the reproduction antique furnishings in the living room. The master bedroom was moved downstairs. An expanded second floor allowed all the children to remain together. The yard was also given a major facelift. A small pool and playground equipment were added, along with a fence to keep the kids in the yard.

Saanvi and Luna liked the house as it was so they asked to maintain the main volumes and the existing architecture. In the front porch they asked for just one door to gain some space in the living. They also changed the windows and sliding color and renovated the interior completely. Now the house has a great flow for everyone. A basement was added with a pool, a sauna and laundry stuff. The side porch was also enlarged both floors and an open terrace was added upstairs to fit Faisal’s telescope. The twins and the girl rooms are downstairs. The twins will be soon toddlers and still have to learn how to use stairs. For the bigger siblings there are a lot of activities and stuff for skill building to keep their minds busy and think a little less in their loss.

ENTRY DETAILS: Outside the home has been given a fresh coat of paint with a bold modern colour and white trim. The planting of soft shades of pinks and blues has been kept simple so Saanvi and Luna can spend their time outside with the children and not working on the garden. Inside has been freshened with a modern cottage style. The first floor has been gutted to give an open living/dining/kitchen area with an overhaul on the family bathroom. French doors replace the old doors leading to the extended patio where seating provides an overlook to a child-centred enclosed garden complete with sand pit, swings and monkey bars. An undercover outdoor dining area allows for family and visitor get-togethers. The master bedroom has been relocated to the ground floor along with the addition of an en-suite. Upstairs has 3 spacious bedrooms each attuned to the specific interests of the children. There is also an updated family bathroom on this level. Downstairs the basement boasts a large media room with it's own kitchenette including popcorn machine. There is also a large utility room on this level including laundry and storage for seasonal decorations.

The house was kept rather similar on the outside, the upstairs was extended and a new balcony added. The porch and balcony at the side of the house were adjusted a little. The shutters and doors were painted black to create a brisk look. Since the area has no playground for children monkey bars and slide were added to the yard. The house now has four bedrooms (but can easily be turned into five bedrooms) and three bathrooms, two of which have a bathtub. Living room, kitchen and Saanvi & Luna's bedroom were redecorated keeping some of the original furniture. Twins have their bedroom and playroom downstairs, so they'll be easy to keep an eye on during the day. Having the other bedrooms upstairs allows Faisal and Nila some privacy and peace.

ENTRY DETAILS: A fairly modest remodel, keeping much of the original furniture and room spaces. The biggest change was zoning and extending the ground floor. Open plan living is not ideal with youngsters running around so the living room and kitchen now have walls. The living room is ideal for the family to be together – and the door ensures that little ones stay put!
There is a new entrance hallway, an ideal place for the large family to store bits and bobs, school stuff and dirty shoes – which helps keep muck out of the house.
Faisel and Nila have their rooms downstairs, helping them to get peace from the babies. The adults are upstairs next to the babies’ room to ensure they can be cared for during sleepless nights. The upper floor has increased in size slightly to allow for more space and a surprise en suite for the grown ups.
The soft colour of green, browns and pinks from the original build have been used throughout the public spaces and the master. The existing bathrooms remain in the same place but with extensive redecoration.

ENTRY DETAILS: I renovated the house by extending the top floor of this shotgun style house and I‘ve redesigned a different floor plan with a new pink paint. I keep some of the old furniture and sell the rest of it. There are 4 bedrooms & 3 bathrooms in total. I decided to give them an open floor plan for the living, dining, & kitchen area. A fireplace is placed to divide the kitchen & the other area. Faisal’s room is located on the ground floor, so that he can enjoy stargazing from the observatory located just next to his room. The room interior design is based on his favourite colour (purple & yellow), full of stars & space art pieces. Nila’s room is located on the top floor and she has a small balcony for her to enjoy the fresh air from time to time. Her room is decorated with her favourite colour (brown & pink) & full of art, crafts and aisle for her upcoming birthday. The twins’ room is located in between Nila’s and the couple’s room. The room is designed based on the colour scheme requested by their aunt. I choose the confetti wallpaper style instead of wall decals for Ayla & Aesha as it gives the room a little bit of style. Saanvi & Luna’s room is located on the new extended floor on the top floor. I give them a fresh new colour & design for the bedroom. There’s a balcony for the couple to enjoy yoga & a walk-in closet next to their bathroom. There’s a small basement for them to store their holiday decorations. At the yard, there’s a small BBQ area for the family to enjoy their weekend & a swing for the little ones. My favourite part of the house is the bedrooms, because each bedroom has their own unique style that represent each of the resident style & interest.

ENTRY DETAILS: Updating Riverside Roost to fit this unexpected family of six has been a pleasure.
Saanvi and Luna loved their original house and how well it fit into the neighborhood, so I tried to keep the outside renovations simple. The entryway was pretty much left alone and still has two front doors, one of the features making the house so special. The front porch was expanded to make space for a BBQ and some seating for the family to hang out in the summer. The whole house got a new coat of paint as well as new shingles on the roof. The windows were mostly kept but painted all white.
The front yard was huge and empty before, so the house was expanded to the right on both floors. There's still enough space in the yard (which has been fenced off to keep the toddlers safe) for a kiddie pool, a swing and of course a telescope for Faisal.
The inside however has been completely updated and modernized. Walking through the front door, there is a big entry/mudroom with lots of space for all those coats and shoes. Behind that is the open dining room and kitchen. The living room is off to the right in the extension. It is separated into two parts, a lounge/TV area with a fireplace (including the urns of the deceased parents) and a children's area, with a doll house, a reading corner and a table for board games. The whole family space has been designed and decorated in neutral colors, since I didn't want to overwhelm the new parents and have them feel like their entire home is now a playground ;-)
Going back through the kitchen there is a small laundry and mudroom that goes out onto the back porch. From there you can enter the downstairs bathroom as well as Saanvi and Luna's bedroom, which has been changed completely. The new comfy bed is the center of the room, with an office area to the right and a little beauty station to the left. There's also a yoga mat for active Saanvi to wind down after a tough day with the kids. The colors have been kept light and cool, with blues and soft yellows, to give the room a relaxing feeling.
Walking up the stairs there is a common area for the kids to hang out, complete with a computer for studying, another reading nook and a little puppet theatre for creative Nila to put on shows for the twins. There's also access to a small bathroom (which is mostly for Faisal) and the back porch with a chess tables.
The kids' rooms are accessible through a little hallway/walk-in closet. To the very left is the twins room, very pink, very girly, very playful. Creative Nila lives in the middle. She got a new awesome bunk bed with a little sitting nook underneath, as well as lots of space for her arts and crafts. The three girls share a bathroom. And lastly, Faisal's room to the right. It is decorated in his favorite colors and separated into three parts, the bed, the desk and a sofa with TV for him and his friends to hang out and play video games. There's also loads of space pictures everywhere, as well as Faisal's space rock collection and some of his latest science projects.

ENTRY DETAILS: For the remodel I added two bedrooms and bath to the canal facing side of the home and also added a fourth bedroom to the second floor with a bath as well. The Kitchen was repositioned to open up the house and create a Great Room with the main Living room. A formal Dining room and a family/game room were located where the small bedroom was originally placed.

ENTRY DETAILS: The house received a new coat of paint to make it stand out a bit more, and new, bigger windows to let in more light. Both porches and the second floor balcony were enlarged. A new, single door was added, with the other one replaced by a window so the chess table could be moved out form between the door and stairs. The kitchen was extended across what used to be a hallway and a wall was removed, giving the first floor an open plan. Upstairs, the second floor was enlarged to make room for more bedrooms and a second bathroom.

ENTRY DETAILS: i tried to keep the exterior as close as possible to the original and included some additional details that i think make it fit in better with the new orleans feels of willow creek. i completely redid the floorplan so i could utilize the space better. both floors were extended so i could have enough rooms for all of the bedrooms as well as an office and playroom. i felt like such a large family would want a lot of different rooms to escape to lol. either of the new rooms could easily be converted into a bedroom in case the twins decide they want separate rooms when they get older. sorry that the screenshots are a bit blurry. i use a mac so ive been having issues with screenshots being blurry and upside down since august.

ENTRY DETAILS: The classic modified double-shotgun has been yet again reimagined, this time with plenty of space for a big family! At five bedrooms and three baths, this house will be a comfortable and welcome home for the unexpected arrivals for years to come. These are great digs for a family on a budget who still wants everyone to be comfortable, and there is still room to expand as the children grow. #MOO #NoCC
My main goal with this remodel was to keep the feel of the original home, but to remake the interior into something warm and comforting as the children adjust to their new home. I think I struck a good balance of meeting development, interest, and space needs of the new arrivals with familiarity for the couple.

ENTRY DETAILS: After a false start where I went completly off track I managed to update Riverside Roost and keep the exterior in the style it was previously. The interior has been completly transformed with the addition of a basement/rumpus room being the biggest change. This open plan room is designed for the children and is totally their space where they can play and relax. It also has aself contained bedroom and bathroom and i devoted this room for the teenage son Faisal.
I redid the layout of both ground and first floor removing hte existing bedroom form the ground floor and devoting htis space to the kitchne instead. There are 3 bedrooms on the now extended first floor which include Nila's bedroom, a nursery for the twins and a master bedroom with ensuite bathroom.

ENTRY DETAILS: Saanvi Ásgeirsdóttir, née Chaudhary, fell in love with Lúna while the two were still in high school. Their romance was not an easy path, however, and Saanvi’s very traditional parents would not approve of the young couple. When she graduated from high school, she and Lúna moved out to college together, and Saanvi’s family became distant, eventually no longer maintaining contact. Despite being estranged, Saanvi still cared deeply for her family, so when she learned her twin sister and brother-in-law had been killed in a car accident, leaving four children behind, she didn’t think twice about taking the children in.
Lúna Ásgeirsdóttir was afraid when she moved to Willow Creek from the Land of the Midnight Sun that she not only wouldn’t be able to make new friends by the time she graduated from high school, but that the culture shock of the temperate, riverside neighborhood would be too much to adjust to. Thankfully, the latter proved to be an unfounded fear, and she fit right in to her new community. At school, she quickly made friends, and ended up meeting the lovely Saanvi Chaudhary. The two became fast friends and then a cute couple, much to the delight of their peers. However, not everyone was thrilled – Saanvi’s very traditional family disapproved, despite Lúna’s attempts to ease their concerns. After high school, she and Saanvi decided it would be best for their relationship to move on together and leave Saanvi’s family to sort their own feelings out. The two married and made a lovely home together; then, one day, tragedy struck Saanvi’s estranged family, and Lúna had to watch her wife’s heart break all over again. She quickly assured Saanvi she’d be happy if they took the children into their own home, so they could have loving parents to raise them.
Faisal Saqqaf is the eldest child of Fadl and Paavai Saqqaf. He’s outwardly quiet and plain, but he has been doing his best to meet his parents’ expectations that he become a scientist. What he really enjoys, though, is the discovery – once he’s found something new and the novelty wears off, he’s ready to move on to the next thing. His dedicated, inward-facing world was thrown upside down by the sudden deaths of his parents, hitting him hard in an already difficult time – high school. Out of nowhere, the aunt his parents rarely spoke of and her wife stepped in to take him and his sisters into their home. They seem like great people – but he’s not sure if he can really open up to them yet.
Nila is the middle child of the Saqqaf children, and her already-shy demeanor was only multiplied by the sudden death of her parents. She’s a creative soul at heart and throws herself into her work with a vigor that surprises even adults. She didn’t know what to make of her new home with her aunts initially; it was pretty crowded, and her Aunt Saanvi’s resemblance to her mom was unsettling. She was surprised and delighted when her aunts took interest in her opinions on things, because they had never mattered to adults in her life before; she was used to simply doing as she was told. When she learned her aunts were intending to remodel their house so she and her siblings could each have their own space, she was thrilled – while still mourning the loss of her parents, she’s nervous and excited to see where this new journey will take her.
Ayla and Aesha Saqqaf, twins, are the youngest of the Saqqaf children. They were barely more than babies when they were orphaned, and they aren’t quite sure what the sudden fuss and move to a new house was about. It seems like Mom is still there, but she dresses differently, and she keeps saying to call her “Aunt Saanvi.” Dad isn’t around anymore, and no one wants to say why, but Aunt Lúna is always there instead. Things are different in the new house, too; there are tall stairs to navigate, and there’s talk about new rooms coming soon. It’s all very confusing, but also very interesting, and they can’t wait to explore and learn more about what’s going on.

Saanvi and Luna are ecstatic with the new arrivals, but not about the cause, though. They had just started talking about getting a family before the tragedy, so they were almost ready for them arriving. They liked the house before, but now they love it! The renovators managed to keep the style and were able to give each room its own personality and have created some safe and nice spaces for the two big siblings and the future toddlers.
Faisal and Nila are still devastated. Taking that in consideration, the house has plenty of equipment for entertainment and skill building. At least if they are busy they won’t go to dark places and feel so bad constantly. That doesn’t mean they have forgotten their parents. Faisal still searches for a star to put her mother’s name in the sky forever, and Nila is getting along pretty well with her new found auntie, she’s even wearing her hair as Saanvi does.
Luna is working in the culinary career as her aspiration is becoming a master chef. And Saanvi is in the painter career, her aspiration is becoming a painter extraordinaire. Both have developed some skills, but they are still down in their jobs levels. Faisal is a grade C student and Nila is a grade B student.

ENTRY DETAILS: Luna and Saanvi were High School sweethearts. Neither family approved and pressured the girls to go to different colleges, hoping they would grow apart and forget each other. But that didn't happen. The pair found each other again after college, discovered they were still very much in love, and decided to get married. They had spoken of maybe adopting someday, but never expected to suddenly be the parents of four so soon. While they certainly regret the way it happened, they are both very happy to raise Saanvi's nephew and nieces as their own and wouldn't have it any other way.
As the oldest, Faisal had been prepared to drop out of school to raise his sister, and is very glad he didn't have to. He's still protective of them, one reason he doesn't mind having the room right next to the twins. He secretly feels like he needs to help out around the house and with his sisters so the aunts he barely knows will want to keep him around.
NIla is the quiet one, who finds some measure of comfort in her drawing and painting, which help her cope with her parents' deaths. At first, she believed the accident was her fault because she was angry at her mother and told her to go away that morning. #BnS105 - Life After Life

The deadline for this challenge is 24th October 2018


You had sent Karl home early to beat the storm. You didn’t want him out in that, but you had some loose ends to clean up - or rather, you had models and sketches and a mess to clean up! You looked back over your design ideas and smile. You’ve always loved making a difference in people’s lives, the look on their faces when they see it… makes all the headaches worth it!

The wind was shaking the windows when you finally decided it was time to head home yourself. You gathered your things and turned out the lights, pulling your coat tight around you as you stepped outside and turned to lock up.

When you turned back around, you nearly jumped out of your skin! There was a figure looming over you in the darkness, seemingly materialized out of the fog.

“Good evening,” he says, voice smooth as velvet.

“G-good evening,” you manage to get out.

“I have not come at a bad time, have I?” the gentleman says.

“Bad time? Oh… no no, I was-” well you were just locking up to go home but does that really constitute ‘bad time’?

“I am glad. I apologize I could not have been here sooner.”

Well, you suppose staying a little later wouldn’t hurt, and you’d rather not stand out here so you unlock the door and escape from the elements. Oddly, your visitor does not follow you in.

“Please, do come in,” you say.

He smiles broadly as he steps inside. You aren’t entirely sure but it seems like his teeth are just a little… longer than average.

Shaking off your coat, you hang it back up and turn the lights on again. Now that you’re able to get a better look at your guest he seems far less looming than outside. You note the piercing eyes, the impeccable if somewhat outdated dress. He does not seem the least beaten by the storm, unlike yourself you’re sure.

“Won’t you sit down?” you ask, motioning to the conference table.

“Thank you,” he says, taking a seat. You can’t quite place the accent, but it seems familiar.

“Now, what can I do for you, Mr…?”
“Ah, you may call me Seth.”

“Well, Mr. Seth, what can I do for you?”

“I am in need of a new residence,” he says. “My current will soon be- ah- uninhabitable. So I will need it quickly, by the end of the month and no later.”

“Of course, we often work on a tight schedule,” you say, though find his choice of words very odd.

“Good, I appreciate that,” he says. “But I require very particular details in my residence.”

“That shouldn’t be a problem,” you assure him, slipping easily back into your professional mode. “We have catered to a wide variety of needs.”

“Then what I am after is a subterranean residence, entirely below ground except for what must necessarily be above to access it.”

“Oh, that’s very do-able,” you say. “We can add skylights or-”

“No!”

He cuts you off so forcefully you jump slightly in your seat.
“I apologize,” he quickly adds. “I just- no skylights. I, uh, value my privacy. I do not wish anyone to be able to see inside. Under any circumstances. No skylights, window wells, nothing. Please.”

“Very well,” you say. “There are plenty of lighting options.”

He relaxes again.

“I value my privacy, so a good fence around the property is a must. But I will need space for entertaining,” he says. “I host events every month.”

“Oh?” That seems interesting. “What kind of events?”

“Exclusive events. Very exclusive.”

“No, I mean…football parties, book club, art shows-”

“Yes! Art, that’s it,” he says, as if taking a conveniently offered excuse and running with it. “Very exclusive art showings. With necar. There will need to be a bar.”

“Okay.” You write that down but this is a very odd client! “And beyond that, is it just you? Just one bedroom or…?”

“Yes, only me. The usual parts of a house, yes. All that. But no mirrors!”

“No mirrors.” You jot down a few more notes. “Well, I think the only thing left is the cost-”

“Here is your payment,” he says, handing you a cashier’s check for… a great deal more than you were about to tell him you needed. You do not ask any questions.

“Well Mr. Seth, I think you’ll be very happy with your new place.”

“I hope so,” he says as he stands up. “After all, just ‘cause I’m dead doesn’t mean I can’t have a life!”

He laughs.

You laugh. Then the words sink in and you stop, but suddenly notice he is no longer standing there. Or, anywhere. You look back at the cashier’s check in your hand and shrug. Well, you’ve done weirder.

We found you a lot with a cute little house that we changed to fit you. We built you a cellar with all the rooms you need. Since you're such an artsy guy, we included a lot of art pieces throughout the house. The above ground level is not quite window free, but we built double walls for you, so no one will be able to look in, and you will not be able to look outside. We felt this was the best decision for the overall aesthetic of the exterior of the house. We made you an open plan kitchen, dining and living area - perfect to host guests! I kept the colors neutral and dark, which I matched with sleek furniture. It's very masculine without feeling like a bachelor pad. Hope you enjoy it!

It really is a beautiful place inside! Just through this door… Umm, well…yes, there are bodies in those coffins. But we are going to the hidden stairs behind the coffins. Don’t lose your nerve now! We built in some underground ancient ruins and tried to keep some of the historic flavor. The first basement level has a couple of pools in the outside, and inside you’ll find the entertainment room desired with the bar and other amenities. A secret entrance will conduct you to the second level, your private quarters, with a kitchen-dinning, a public bathroom, a laundry room and a den with a secret crypt. Another door leads to your master bedroom, with a living, a private bath and another secret crypt for your special guests.

ENTRY DETAILS: I wanted a luxurious feel with both modern and traditional styles. I wanted to keep it mainly neutral so that it was nice and bright throughout. I also added in an 'indoor outdoor' room, giving the feel of a garden whilst being inside. Keeping it neutral also means you get the wow factor when entering the exclusive room for entertaining, which is furnished with deep reds and cream furniture.

ENTRY DETAILS: Seth is the kind of guy who seems to know everyone, but no one really seems to know him that well. He’s been around a while, but when the topic of his age comes up, he deftly deflects with a quip about being “old enough,” and lets his surname do the rest of the talking for him. He’s become a bit of a Snob over the years, mostly from becoming well-versed in what lasts and what doesn’t.
Seth’s had a long time to refine his skills, but he’s come to realize that many get rusty when they’re not used often. His impressive collection of books in his library has ensured that his knowledge can always be replenished, but sometimes, just putting in the work is what it takes. He was once skilled in several instruments, as well as singing, but when his fingers and voice got out of practice, he decided to refocus on the ones he loved most, the pipe organ, piano, and violin. His personal pipe organ is his most treasured instrument, while he uses his love of piano as an excuse to get out of the house and visit some nightclubs – the patrons are always delighted by his playing and are interested in striking up a conversation. The nightclub scene led to interests in art, dancing, and mixology, which he’s incorporated into his home life.
Despite all of these interests, Seth remains a Loner at heart, and he maintains a Neat aspect in both his personal attire and his home. You won’t find stray drinking glasses or out-of-place books if you’re one of the few he invites in for his exclusive gatherings. Despite his rather youthful appearance, Seth has achieved more things than most people, and as a result, he’s become more fond of entertaining and being entertained than anything else. He's starting to aspire to be a Party Animal, and he wants to throw the best parties in town.

Seth Fargough has lived many places during his long life, and taken many identities. When asked where he was born, he will mention growing up in Egypt, but refuses to offer any further details. Family is another topic Seth doesn't like to discuss though he keeps portraits of several relatives around. When pressed, he admits to having participated in wars, but won't say which.
Though in recent years he has come to love his privacy, inviting only a select few into his home on his own terms, Seth once thrived on chaos, enjoying crowds and activity. He once led a cult, but when their hideout was raided, Seth disappeared and left that life behind him, reinventing himself yet again as an eccentric loner with a love of art and antiques.

#BnS106 - That Entrepreneurial Spirit

“Mrs. Fisher is here,” Karl says over your intercom. You thank him and ask to have her come in, rising to greet her when she does.

“I’m so glad you could make time for me,” she says, taking your hand and giving a firm shake.

“I’m always happy to help the small-business people of the town,” you say, being one yourself. “What are your plans?”

She sits and sets her briefcase down. “I want to put a four-to-six-unit retail building for local small businesses to get their products to a wide-array of customers. I am very interested in helping small entrepreneurs to realize their dreams. I already have a lot that I own for this purpose, so that won't be part of the expense.”

You can certainly appreciate that. “Do you know which businesses those will be yet?”

She opens her briefcase and takes out several folders. “No. I have a number of applications here, but I have not finalized them. The units will need to be fairly generic, nothing crazy, these will have to be rentable to a variety businesses.”

“That should be easy to do. Do you want each to have its own storefront, or more of a small mall with a common court?”

“I am not good with design, so I’ll leave that to you.”

Well, that is your job, but it always makes you a little nervous when the customer isn’t really sure what they want, it makes it more guess-work on your end.

“There should be some parking or bike racks for customers to use,” Mrs. Fisher adds after a moment. “Restrooms. Some landscaping to draw the eye; people should want to come here.”

You finish writing it down. “That shouldn’t be a problem. I think you can expect your building by the end of the month. All you need to do pick your renters.”

“I am so happy I picked you for my architect,” Mrs. Fisher said. “I think we will get along quite well.”

You smile, hoping that’s true.

Each has their own balcony area except for the ground floor retail store. There’s also a small area for artists or visitors who would like to sell their paintings or run an exhibition. The customers are encourage to visit the Cubic SoHo by walking, however, there’s a car park & bicycle racks too. A public restroom is located on the ground floor near the bicycle racks for both customers & retailers. For entertainment purposes, the customers or visitors can also enjoy playing chess or enjoying the dancing water fountain while waiting for their family or friend shopping.

It’s that time again - time for you to show off your awesome design skills! This round, we’ve taken a base game house and stripped it down completely - no roof, no siding, no flooring, no wall coverings and no terrain paint. It’s a blank canvas for you to completely decorate to your vision.

Well, almost completely blank that is… we’ve left a few items behind that you have to use in your design. The items must be used as-is - no substitutions, no changing the colors, and they must remain in the room in which you find them. You can, however, move the objects within the room as you see fit. Additionally, the items should help inform or inspire your design choices in that room in some way.

You can place the shell on any size lot in any world of your choice.
Equal attention in judging will be given to interior design, landscaping, and architectural design.
You cannot add onto the existing building, but you can add other, unattached buildings to the lot if you wish (ex. garage, potting shed, etc.)

ENTRY DETAILS: I changed the side of the front of the home. I added porches, more windows, and doors. Upstairs I created closets in each bedroom. I created a traditional looking outside, but the interior is full of comfort for a large family. The house itself has fast internet, Gnomes, and On Ley Line, insuring twins are mainly born. The two children's rooms reflect this, with a toddlers room with two beds and an older children/pre-teens room for two more siblings. A large yard,wrap around porches/decks, and two balconies all provide space for a large family to sleep, eat, play, and relax together!

ENTRY DETAILS: High on the cliffs of Salvadorado is a house perfect for that retired couple. If you have all the time in the world and hate blowing winter snows Hana Lee is your paradise. Bright colors through out the house will make anyone forget the cold. If your a growing family and need a getaway from the city streets this house is ready for you. Can sleep up to 4 adults/children and two toddlers. Come stay the weekend or live out your winters. A 2 story 3 br & 3ba vacation home originally built hundreds of years ago. Over time many have stayed here and left their mark. Either with the art on the walls or decor. Will you make your next mark? (Thanks for extension!)

ENTRY DETAILS: Based on the arches I decided to go for a Spanish style house (then I realized it was the original style of the house). So, I added a couple of porches wrapping around the first floor to add some more interest in the house shape and in order to keep the house cooler avoiding some sun and creating ventilated and covered zones to spend some nice time outdoors. The house is ready for 6 people (one being a toddler). The garden is low maintenance, adapted to the dry desert weather, but in the backyard there’s plenty of water in a fishing pond and a pool.
