I control this in my game in Managed Households under Configure Neighborhood with Neighborhood Stories Enabled. I can configure all non-played sims in the game while aging is off so that my favorited households are not effected or don't age until I want them to. For example non-played sims can die in an accident but my households that are favorited will not. Favorited households die when I feel like aging them up but non-played sims in my game are at risk of everything fatal in the game.
