The Family Tree Overhaul pt.2

The Sims 4 Needs a Second Family Tree Overhaul

Dear EA/Maxis & Fellow Simmers,

About a year ago I made a post on here complaining about how bare bones the Family Tree was. Parents, siblings, kids, grandparents, and that was it. Anyone past that just didn't exist as far as the game was concerned, and if a Sim died or got culled, half their branch could disappear with them. If you've ever run a long legacy save you know how frustrating that is. You lose track of who's related to who, and worse, the game itself loses track, which is how you end up with cousins flirting with each other because as far as the code is concerned they're strangers.

Then February happened. The Family Tree update gave us ten generations, real labels for in laws, half siblings, step relatives, great grandparents, grand aunts and uncles, the whole thing. Direct ancestors and descendants can't romance each other anymore either. Honestly, it was one of those rare moments where you post a suggestion and then actually watch it show up in the game. So first, thank you. That update was not small.

But I'm back because there's still a hole in it, and it's the same hole that started this whole conversation, just one generation further out now. Past first cousin, everything gets dumped into one label: Distant Relative. A second cousin and a fourth cousin and a first cousin twice removed all look identical to the game. And that's exactly the gap that lets it happen again, just further down the tree. My great grandkids from two different siblings ended up developing feelings for each other, and the game had absolutely no idea they were second cousins, even though the tree itself would've told you that in two clicks.

So here's round two of the ask, and honestly it's the natural next step after what you already built:

Actual cousin degree labels. Second cousin, third cousin, once removed, twice removed, calculated instead of everything past first cousin getting lumped together.

In law labels that go further out too. Uncle in law, aunt in law, step in law cousin, not just the immediate parent/sibling in law set from February.

Make the relation calculated, not a checklist. The direct ancestor block already works this way, so extend that same logic outward instead of relying on a short list of flags. Worth mentioning, those flags can already break. There are bug reports of cousin relationships silently vanishing if a sibling gets deleted in CAS the wrong way.

A slider for how far the blocking goes. Some of us want it locked down tight past third or fourth cousin. Others are doing royal dynasty saves where historically accurate cousin marriage is kind of the point. Give us an option like the Woohoo settings and everyone's happy.

Some kind of visual difference for how closely related someone is. Even just a shading difference between close, extended, and distant would help once a tree gets past five or six generations, because right now it's just a wall of names.

I know this sounds like a big ask, but it's not really new territory. Crusader Kings 3 already does the harder version of this with zero mods, it calculates actual relatedness between any two characters based on their closest shared ancestor and that number decides whether a marriage is even allowed. Sims 3 never got past first cousins at all, so this franchise has been behind on this for a long time, and inZOI, which a lot of people are watching as the next big competitor, actually went the opposite direction and loosened up who can romance who instead of adding this kind of detail. This is a chance for Sims 4 to actually be the one that gets it right details and all.

This isn't just about stopping awkward accidental cousin romance, though that alone would be worth it. It's about the tree actually meaning something again once your save hits ten, fifteen generations. Right now the further out you play, the less the game understands its own family.

Thanks again for February. Hoping this gets picked up the same way.

A devoted Simmer & generational player

💡 Ideas > THINGS we want to see in The Sims 4 !!! | EA Forums - 4943042

While reviewing my wishlist to see if I forgot anything, I was thinking about how badly we need an overhaul for the family tree. Right now, it’s just a chaotic mess of overlapping lines, and to make matters worse, the game occasionally glitches and randomly changes Sim relationships. Having the ability to manually set relationships between two Sims using the 'cas.fulleditmode' cheat would fix (even if just temporarily) so many of these bugs.

To make things much smoother, they should definitely add more relationship options. For instance: "Secret Child." This feature actually exists in the Royalty & Legacy, but only if you play through a secret affair and have the mother (well, us, the players) forge the birth certificate at the exact moment of birth to trick the partner. If, unfortunately, the baby is born while you are playing a different household, it just becomes a regular baby with the biological father and no scandal attached. Plus, if a glitch accidentally removes the "Secret Child" trait from the kid, there is currently no way to add it back without using mods.

Other essential relationships that need to be added are the classics: uncle, aunt, great-aunt, adopted child, nephew/niece, etc. But above all, we need an "Ancestor" tag. This would be a massive improvement for ghosts, especially with the Life & Death expansion. For example, it would allow Lady Ravendancer Crowley to be officially recognized as the ancestor of Bella Goth. This way, we could build a lineage originating from a ghost that haunts the world for centuries, without being forced to clutter the family tree with dozens of grayed-out generations just because we had to create transitional Sims in CAS and delete them later to clear up household space for the latest generation we actually want to play.

Appreciate the suggestion but I don’t think that actually fixes it, wanted to explain why in case it helps anyone else running into the same thing.

Custom Relationship Labels are just cosmetic text. It’s the same feature that lets you rename “Romantic Partner” to something custom. It’s not tied to the actual family tree, the Distant Relative bit, or Dynasty tracking at all. So you can type “Second Cousin” on two sims and it’ll show up that way in the relationship panel, but nothing about how the game actually understands them as related changes anywhere else.

It also has nothing to do with romance eligibility. Who your sims can actually pursue romantically is controlled by the family tree checks (the new ancestor block plus the old first cousin restriction). A cosmetic label lives completely outside that system so it can’t be granting or blocking anything there either.

And honestly it just doesn’t scale. There’s no way to bulk apply it, you’d have to go through every single pair manually through the pie menu. In a save with 200+ sims that’s not really a fix, that’s hours of busywork, and you’d have to keep doing it forever as new sims get born into the tree.

What would actually help here is a real settings option for this. Right now it’s basically nothing, we could have either full guardrails where any relatedness at all blocks romance, or no guardrails if you turn off the restriction entirely. Neither one may really works for a lot of others story progression. Some of us want that in between option, where romance is only blocked up to a certain point of relatedness, so first cousins and closer stay off limits but second cousins and beyond are fair game. That’s honestly how a lot of players (and a lot of real world cultures and history, especially with royalty) actually approach it, so having a slider or a toggle for where that line sits would solve both the labeling problem and the eligibility problem at once, instead of needing mods to patch around it.

Maxis added Custom Relationship Label to let the player set manually detailed labels.

  • And I want to be clear this isn’t just about blocking things. Some of us are playing this on purpose. I’m running a Royalty & Legacy save right now where I replaced the game’s default title ranks with my own 10 rank peerage system:

    • Rank 10 — King / Queen / Monarch → heir: Prince / Princess / Princem
    • Rank 9 — Prince / Princess / Princem → heir: Duke / Duchess / Duchum
    • Rank 8 — Grand Duke / Grand Duchess / Grand Duchum → heir: Duke / Duchess / Duchum
    • Rank 7 — Duke / Duchess / Duchum → heir: Marquess / Marchioness / Marquem
    • Rank 6 — Marquess / Marchioness / Marquem → heir: Count / Countess / Countum
    • Rank 5 — Count / Countess / Countum → heir: Viscount / Viscountess / Viscountum
    • Rank 4 — Viscount / Viscountess / Viscountum → heir: Baron / Baroness / Baronum
    • Rank 3 — Baron / Baroness / Baronum → heir: Baronet / Baronetess / Baronetum
    • Rank 2 — Baronet / Baronetess / Baronetum → heir: Lord / Lady / Lordem (courtesy only)
    • Rank 1 — Knight / Dame / Knightum → heir: Esquire / Damsel / Squirem

There are points in that system where keeping a marriage inside the bloodline actually matters for who holds what rank, the same way real royal houses used cousin marriage for centuries. My Downton Abbey inspired save leans on that too, Mary Crawley and Matthew Crawley get married just like the show, and their actual connection is fourth cousins, both descending from the 3rd Earl of Grantham. That’s the exact kind of relationship period accurate aristocratic storytelling runs on, distant enough that no one in universe even blinks, but still technically on the family tree if you traced it back far enough. The show plays it the same way, they call each other cousin, everyone in the family knows it, and it’s never treated as scandalous.

What happened with my great grandkids wasn’t that. It was two Sims who happened to be second cousins developing feelings for each other with zero input from me, because the game genuinely had no idea they were related. Also I specifically didn't want/need these two having kids per my saves lore. Those are two completely different situations, and right now the game can’t tell them apart, it just sees an empty box between two Sims either way. A modern legacy player wants that empty box to mean blocked, without having to think about it. A royalty player might want it left open, on purpose.

  • **Genealogy Naming Reference (for the Family Tree feedback thread)**

Posting this as a companion reference to the Family Tree suggestion thread, in case it helps others explain exactly which relationships still get lumped into "Distant Relative." These are the standard genealogy terms, side by side with what Sims 4 currently shows as of the February 2026 update.

    ---

    **Direct Line (Ancestors & Descendants)**

    - 1 generation: Parent / Child — Sims 4: Parent / Child

    - 2 generations: Grandparent / Grandchild — Sims 4: Grandparent / Grandchild

    - 3 generations: Great-Grandparent / Great-Grandchild — Sims 4: Great-Grandparent / Great-Grandchild

    - 4 generations: 2x Great-Grandparent / 2x Great-Grandchild — Sims 4: Distant Relative

    - 5+ generations: 3x, 4x Great-Grandparent, etc. — Sims 4: Distant Relative

Each generation past great-grandparent just adds another "Great-."

    ---

    **Sibling Types**

    - Full Sibling: shares both parents

    - Half-Sibling: shares one parent

    - Step-Sibling: no blood relation, tied through a parent's remarriage

    - Adoptive Sibling: legally, not biologically, related

    - Foster Sibling: raised together, no legal adoption

    - Sibling-in-Law: spouse's sibling, or sibling's spouse

    ---

    **Niece/Nephew Line**

    - Sibling's child: Niece / Nephew — Sims 4: Niece / Nephew

    - Sibling's grandchild: Grandniece / Grandnephew — Sims 4: Grandniece / Grandnephew

    - Sibling's great-grandchild: Great-Grandniece / Great-Grandnephew — Sims 4: Distant Relative

    - Half-sibling's child: Half-Niece / Half-Nephew — Sims 4: Distant Relative

    - Step-sibling's child: Step-Niece / Step-Nephew — Sims 4: not recognized

    Gender-neutral option: Nibling.

    ---

    **Aunts, Uncles, and Beyond**

    - Parent's sibling: Aunt / Uncle — Sims 4: Aunt / Uncle

    - Parent's half-sibling: Half-Aunt / Half-Uncle — Sims 4: Distant Relative

    - Stepparent's sibling: Step-Aunt / Step-Uncle — Sims 4: not recognized

    - Parent's sibling's spouse: Aunt-in-Law / Uncle-in-Law — Sims 4: not recognized

    - Grandparent's sibling: Grand-Aunt / Grand-Uncle — Sims 4: Grand-Aunt / Grand-Uncle

    - Great-grandparent's sibling: Great-Grand-Aunt / Great-Grand-Uncle — Sims 4: Distant Relative

    Gender-neutral option: Pibling.

    ---

    **Cousins: Degree & Removed**

Degree = how many generations back to the shared ancestor. Removed = the generational gap between you and your cousin.

    - Share a grandparent → 1st Cousin (once/twice/etc. removed if generations don't match)

    - Share a great-grandparent → 2nd Cousin (this is the exact case for great-grandkids of two siblings)

    - Share a 2x great-grandparent → 3rd Cousin

    - Share a 3x great-grandparent → 4th Cousin

    - Share a 4x great-grandparent → 5th Cousin

Same generation, no gap = straight "Nth cousin." Different generations = add "removed" for each generation of gap.

    Variants:

    - Half-Cousin: child of a half-aunt/uncle

    - Double Cousin: cousins on both sides at once (two siblings marry two siblings from another family)

    - Cousin-in-Law: spouse's cousin

    - Step-Cousin: tied through a step-aunt/uncle, no blood relation

**Sims 4 currently labels anything past 1st cousin as Distant Relative.**

    ---

    **In-Laws**

    - Spouse's parent: Mother/Father-in-Law — Sims 4: Mother/Father-in-Law

    - Spouse's sibling / sibling's spouse: Sister/Brother-in-Law — Sims 4: Sister/Brother-in-Law

    - Child's spouse: Daughter/Son-in-Law — Sims 4: Daughter/Son-in-Law

    - Spouse's grandparent: Grandmother/father-in-Law — Sims 4: Distant Relative-in-Law

    - Spouse's aunt/uncle: Aunt/Uncle-in-Law — Sims 4: not recognized

    - Spouse's cousin: Cousin-in-Law — Sims 4: not recognized

    ---

    **Step-Relations**

    - Parent's new spouse: Stepmother / Stepfather — Sims 4: Stepmother / Stepfather

    - Stepparent's other child: Stepsister / Stepbrother — Sims 4: Stepsister / Stepbrother

    - Spouse's child (not yours): Stepdaughter / Stepson — Sims 4: Stepdaughter / Stepson

    - Stepparent's sibling: Step-Aunt / Step-Uncle — Sims 4: not recognized

    - Stepparent's parent: Step-Grandmother / Step-Grandfather — Sims 4: not recognized

    ---

    **Adoptive & Foster**

    - Adoptive Mother/Father, Adoptive Son/Daughter, Adoptive Sibling

    - Foster Parent, Foster Sibling

    - Godparent / Godchild (chosen, not blood)

    ---

**When "Distant Relative" Should Actually Apply**

Genealogy does use "distant relative" as a real catch all, just not this early:

    - 5th cousin or further

    - Shared ancestor is unknown or untraceable

    - Multiple modifiers stacked together (half + step + in-law + removed)

    - Beyond great-grand-aunt/uncle or 3rd cousin, several times removed

Second cousin, half-aunt, step-aunt, and aunt-in-law all have specific, well known names. That's the core of the ask: stop skipping straight to "Distant Relative" when a real term already exists.

    ---

    **Quick Legend**

    - "Great-" → one more generation out on a direct or niece/nephew line

    - "Grand-" → used once, right before "Great-" kicks in

    - "Removed" → cousins from different generations

    - Cousin number → how far back the shared ancestor is

    - "In-law" → by marriage, not blood

    - "Step-" → through a remarriage, not blood

    - "Half-" → shares one parent (or grandparent) instead of two

    - "Double" → related through both sides at once
