Cake keeps disappearing

Every time i make a cake my sim will place it not on the center of the counter. When i go to move it back to the center to put candles on it, it disappears and goes into the household inventory. Then when i try and place it on a table/counter from build mode, it goes straight back into the household inventory. This is very frustrating as I cannot have birthday parties anymore.
