Can sims of the same household live in different dorm rooms, but still playable?

Hi! This might be a dumb question, but I have three sims of the same household and I'm planning on them to enroll in the same university. I'm aware that sims of the same household can live in the same dorm room, but what about different dorm rooms? If so, are they still playable - meaning, I can just jump from one dorm room to another room without my sims becoming an NPC or having loading screens with each switch. My question leans towards how you have a residential house and each sim can have their own room and they are still playable. Also, can I have a dorm room all to myself? Is this feature optional?
