Feeding a cowplant only satisfies hunger if the "cake" is visible.

Product: The Sims 4
Platform:PC
Which language are you playing the game in? English
How often does the bug occur? Whenever you feed a cowplant before it's hungry.
What is your current game version number? 1.65.77.1020
What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed? Sims 4 Seasons, Cats and Dogs, Get Together, Jungle Adventure, Parenthood, Spa Day, Outdoor Retreat, Tiny Living Stuff, Perfect Patio Stuff, Realm of Magic, Island Living, Romantic Garden Stuff, Nifty Knitting
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves?  Have a Sim get a good night's sleep, and feed the cowplant in the morning before the "cake" is visible (where the options are "Feed," "Pet," or "Play With," not when the options are "Feed" or "Eat Cake.).
What happens when the bug occurs? The cowplant becomes hungry and sticks it's Cake out almost immediately after!

What do you expect to see? The cowplant to have its hunger topped off and not to get dangerously hungry.
Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? No.
Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? I think this happened after the latest patch.  (The one with the much-desired pets eat also not on command!)

I've had two cowplants die since the latest patch and was feeling really guilty and neglectful, but I've noticed in my renewed desire to not kill any more that feeding doesn't seem to work unless they're in the Cake phase of hunger.

  • Okay, with further testing I'm not 100% sure my initial observations hold.  I still think they're getting too hungry too fast! and faster than they used to! and did have a cowplant stick out its tongue IMMEDIATELY after I fed it without the tongue visible, but... it instead seems to be completely random where instead before I thought there was more of a pattern.  So I'm going to mark this as the solution (such as it is).

(Basically:  Feeding not topping off hunger is probably a bug.  Changing the rate of hunger decay to possibly be an RNG rate is probably an intentional development choice.)

  • @xochiquetzl_xkvn , Yes, it used to not stick out the cake right after, at least not always , as if your trying to feed it was a trigger for the cake.🤨  But I guess you can just feed it again to top off its hunger need.😉  Or does that not work either?🤔

Well, that's what I do, yes.  I just kind of feel that if I feed the cowplant it shouldn't become desperately hungry immediately.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but my interpretation was always:

    1. No cake, offer food, cowplant shakes head:  Not hungry.

    2. No cake, offer food, cowplant eats:  Hungry.

    3. Cake visible:  DESPERATELY HUNGRY.

If you engaged in action 2 regularly enough, you might never see the cake.  Now, if you engage in action 2, the cake appears less than an hour later.  In other words, only food offered when the cowplant is DESPERATELY HUNGRY has any hunger-satisfying effect.

Maybe I should change the subject line to be clearer.

@xochiquetzl_xkvn , no I agree that that is how it should be, logically! 🙂   I have always found that feeding it when the cake was not visible didn't do much ever ☹️., but if the cake now always shows up right after you feed it , then yes, something has changed I think. 🤔  Right after Strangerville released i remember my infected Sim who would be awake all night would tend the family CowPlant and that even if I fed it a lot, it would still eventually bring the cake out (and I assumed that meant it was extra hungry).  But it usually wouldn't put the cake out as quickly as you are seeing in your game now. Maybe occasionally, depending on the timing, but not that often!

@PugLove888 and @xochiquetzl_xkvn In my experience the cow plant has always been a very erratic creature. So the same things happened when my Sims fed the beast. At one time it would be desperately hungry after half an hour or an hour, then at other times it would be nicely fed for half a day. The only time I know somethings changed was after the patchupdate just before EA launched 'Eco Lifestyle'. It occurred to me that when I moved a dead cow plant in building mode, the beast suddenly lived up for a brief moment 😏! This happend with and without mods. It was only after the update just before Nifty Knitting that this glitch was repaired.

All my households, at one time or another grew cow plants and i have always seen this erratic behavior. It could well mean that your Cow plant is hungry for something better that 'normal food'. I would suggest to you @xochiquetzl_xkvn to give it a more substantial meal.

    Spoiler
Try feeding it one of your Sims. You might be surprised what you can do with the cow afterwards. Try milking it and feed the milk to one of your Sims or a NPC. The effects depend on the mood your Sim was in when he/she got eaten! 😵🤪All in all it will be fun to watch and you will see what you can do with tis part of the game

I really love my cow plants 🤣

    Have fun playing 😏

    LOL!  I do.  :D

I know it sounds like a really minor annoyance, but in context...

<probably more than you want to know>My Sim is a level 10 Gardener in the PhD of Pollen Gardener job.  He's required to have that cowplant for his job, because his work from home assignments sometimes include "feed a cowplant" and "be eaten by a cowplant."  He's also disgustingly rich (without cheating! gardening is the bomb) so he could certainly just take the hit and not get paid that day, but it's super-frustrating to get a work assignment you can't do.  (I know this because I have a mermaid conservationist in another save that sometimes gets the work assignment "snorkel.")  I could just send him into the office (what I've been doing with the mermaid), but he and his wife have a toddler and she also has a job (level 10 e-Sport Gamer).  I could just hire a nanny--they could certainly afford it--but if he can work from home, why?  So the cowplant is actually super important in that context.</probably more  than you want to know>

Because he gets the work-from-home assignment "get eaten by a cowplant," he does feed it more substantial things from time to time. 😉  It's also eaten party guests, LOL.

I know they've always been erratic.  It just seems like they get hungrier faster, and feeding them before the tongue sticks out seems ineffective.  I did some testing before I posted--not extensive, but I wanted to see if it was repeatable--before I posted, honest!

LOL, I've seen the dead cowplant come back to live in build mode, too.

It also reverts to a bud (horns sticking out of the ground) that somehow grunts, rings its bell, and eats people from time to time, but reset object fixes that.  LOL.  That one wasn't really worth mentioning in context.  😉
