[FR] Can't delete cursed book (routing failure going up stairs)

Product: The Sims 4
Platform:PC
Which language are you playing the game in? English
How often does the bug occur? Occasionally (10% - 49%)
What is your current game version number? 1.104.58.1030
What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed? All expansion packs and game packs, Paranormal, Nifty Knitting, Tiny Living, My First Pet Stuff, Laundry Day, Fitness Stuff, Bowling Night, Vintage Glamour, Romantic Garden, Movie Hangout, Spooky, Cool Kitchen.
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? I'm not sure, since the Cursed Book event is what triggered the issue, and this is the first time I've had that event occur in my game. Therefore I also can't answer how often the bug occurs for me, since I don't know if this is going to be a one-time glitch or a happens every time sort of issue.
What happens when the bug occurs? The Cursed Book appeared in a tenant's room. I tried to send the Property Manager to delete the book, but she wouldn't go upstairs to that room. (Game kept canceling the action.) So I clicked on the door to switch to the room occupant's household, which was the only action that clicking their door would allow. Neither occupant of that room (both of whom were in the downstairs shared space at the time) would go upstairs to enter the room, much less delete the cursed book. Eventually the curse ended up causing a fire on the lot, which was extinguished by the tenants, but still no one would go into the room where the cursed book was or delete it. I even tried to get someone to mail it, thinking that interaction might work, but any attempt to interact with the cursed book got deleted from the queue immediately.
What do you expect to see? I expect to see either the property manager or the apartment occupant, or the Grim Reaper, Beelzebub, or SOMEONE to be able to enter the room and delete the dang book.
Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? Not now. I've removed them.
Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? No

The only change I have made to my gameplay prior to starting this game was that I removed my Mods folder prior to starting a brand new save in order to test play in Tomarang on a rental residential lot. I have experienced lot breakage and a corrupted save previously, but I was using mods at the time, so I wanted to try a mods-free test save to determine if I am able to use the new lot type safely if I don't have my usual mods and CC in the game. The rental residential build I used was downloaded from the gallery. Nothing about the build was altered prior to use, aside from me adding the For Rent sign and a mailbox, since if the build contained these items, I didn't spot either one when I downloaded it onto the lot. I think the only change I made to the lot itself was changing it from Residential to Rental Residential so I could download the lot. I was playing with a brand new Sim I created for the save. All seemed to be going well until the Cursed Book event started, but then I couldn't get anyone to go upstairs, enter the room with the book and delete it, and I couldn't open build mode to delete it that way because the event was still ongoing.

[Edited to add additional information]--I went back into the save to see if the book had de-glitched. I discovered that the stairs leading to the room with the book didn't seem to work, although I couldn't see anything obstructing them, but I couldn't go into Build Mode to try to rebuild or replace the stairs since the game still showed the Cursed Book event in progress. I figured I would wait for the time limit to elapse and then rebuild the stairs or replace the build with a different lot. In the meantime, since I noticed all tenant leases were in the Grace Period, I evicted all occupants, thinking if all else failed, I might be able to sell the rental property. None of these ideas worked. The Cursed Book event changed to an eviction event, but even though the property menu showed all tenants were evicted and all units were vacant, I still couldn't do anything about fixing the stairs, getting to the upstairs room (though the Book disappeared after the Cursed Book event changed to an Eviction Event), and I had no option to sell the property. I also couldn't save the game because I kept getting a popup that I was in the middle of an eviction event even though everyone was already gone. My property manager's apartment was hidden for some reason and she was unable to get to it, because only the apartment the Cursed Book had been in was visible, but she couldn't get to that room, so she couldn't go to sleep. Clearly the Cursed Book is aptly named!

I didn't manage to get any screenshots of the book itself, just the room it was in, but here's what I was able to get.

@EvieDelacourt I currently don't have much time for testing but maybe you could check that save if you can remove the book with teleporting.

  • @EvieDelacourt Did the stairs work prior to the cursed book event or did you never used them ?

Can you teleport into the room with the cheat and delete it then ?

  • I can't remember if my played Sim had tried going upstairs prior to the cursed book event, though I thought I had seen some tenants going upstairs earlier. I wasn't paying much attention to the tenants' movements yet since I was still familiarizing myself with the layout of new building and greeting new tenants downstairs. I entered a tenant's room at one point, but don't remember if that was upstairs or downstairs. It didn't occur to me to try teleporting. (Normally I only teleport spellcasters and don't think about non-occult Sims teleporting.) 😄 All of this chaos happened maybe an hour after I downloaded the build and selected tenants, had the Welcome Wagon event, then a neighbor invited my sim to the lounge shortly after the tenants arrived and appeared to be functioning normally. She was still at the lounge when the notification about the cursed book popped up and she returned to the property to find everyone oddly blasé about there being a tome of chaotic destruction sitting on the floor directly overhead. 😂 I can see if she can teleport into the room tonight, but in any case the book is now gone and the glitches are still occuring because the game thinks it is still evicting tenants who have already left.

@EvieDelacourt It's hard to tell what's the cause of what. Do you have a backup from before the book incident occurred ?
  • From before the cursed book event started, no, since I had just created the save and had only been playing in it a short while. However, I exited the game the first time in the middle of the event, and originally didn't think to do a Save and Exit since normally I try not to save in the middle of a glitch. But later I noticed that the new save was still in my list as the last played game, so I resumed the game and continued trying to delete the book. (That's when I first noticed the stairs weren't working for me.) Although I couldn't save the game later because I got a notification saying I couldn't do so during an eviction event, I think that save still exists in my saves file if you want it. I don't know if that last save point would take you back to the middle of the cursed book event or to when I gave up playing the second time.

  • OK, I'll check again when I get home and see if the save point time travels me back to when the cursed book event was still occurring. If so, and if teleporting into the room to delete the book and end the event properly works, I'll name my next wedding chapel after you. "St. Crinrict In The Meadows" has a nice ring to it.

  • I can also try putting the same build in a different lot with another test sim just to see if those stairs normally work, if my original test sim is still stuck on her accursed lot watching the world burn around her.

@crinrict So the third time was the charm. When I returned to the save, it started me back in the middle of the Cursed Book event like I was stuck in the movie "Groundhog Day," so I tried teleporting my sim to the upstairs room where the book was, and she was able to destroy it once she was up there. The stairs were still broken (not certain yet if they were downloaded that way, but it seems likely), so I had to demolish and rebuild them. There were a few other glitches after that, but they seemed like the normal garden-variety sort of annoying glitches commonplace in Sims 4, nothing that significantly affected gameplay.

A special service of thanksgiving will be offered up at St. Crinrict's Chapel, Newcrest, at noon tomorrow. No actual llamas will be harmed in the token sacrifice.

@EvieDelacourt My most probably guess is that it was the stairs being broken in the first place. I tested another save game that had broken stairs. It was very weird. Some of them worked, others didn't for no apparent reason.

    Think replacing helped.

When trying to evict the tenants, you most likely simply ran into some of the other existing bugs, leaving the save in the state it was.

I'm moving this to game issues for now but you might wanna check the compiled list for known 'For Rent' issues and click me too on whatever you see too.

I'm very honored that there will be special service in my chapel :D
