You choose that trait in CAS when you make a sim. You can't gain it through game play otherwise.
Hope this helps.
- So, are you saying that I can't get this trait through certain actions? For example, playing the violin to gain the music lover trait.

Yes, the only reliable ways to get the trait on a sim is by assigning it in CAS or when a sim ages up (like when you give traits to a child or teen at age up).
It might be possible to get the trait through Discovery Quest as a young adult, but I have never seen that one come up for assignment through that process. The same for the Island Living traits, Child of the Islands and Child of the Ocean.
Hope this helps.
- @CGrant56 I think what you said is wrong. If you look at the information posted on Reddit, there is information excluding the child of village trait. This data indicates how various traits can be obtained.

@specialside Thanks for the link. What I said stands though. According to the Reddit post spreadsheet, you can gain Child of the Ocean and Child of the Islands through the Discovery Quest/Self Discovery. I have not ever gotten either that way though, but I did say it may be possible for those. The spreadsheet also says there is no way that the author could find to get the Child of the Village trait, so yes, I was wrong on that in that you can't get it through the Discovery Quest/Self Discovery mechanic it seems.
