Question about dead sims being culled

I play with a lot of families and sometimes I like to go back and visit some of my deceased sims, I have a spellcaster sim that can necrocall them from their graves. I noticed that some of my sims weren't showing up when I necrocalled them and I couldn't "strengthen their connection to the physical realm". Does this mean they've been culled? How can stop them from being culled? I remember awhile ago when I used to play one family, I got a popup saying the spirit of one of my sims friends was fading away, do those just not show up anymore? Should I just make these deceased sims their own household and leave them unhoused in the "Other Households" tab? Or should I just add anyone that would know them to my "Played Households" so I can get a popup of when they're about to fade away? If anyone has any answers that would be great.

  • @Yoglooney I often free up space in My Households by moving Sims into Other Households. I regularly cull townies that are randomly generated and keep tabs on ones I've created or want to keep. So I end up with a group of favourites at the top of the list in Other Households. Every Sunday when I'm playing, I take a look through Other Households to do this kind of routine maintenance. I've not lost anyone from Other Households so far. Some are housed and some are not.
I haven't tried this with ghosts as I don't have deaths in my game unless accidental and I bring them back if that happens.
I find that doing the culling myself has ensured I've not lost a favourite. But I play on console with Neighborhood Stories off so this may be different for PC players or with NS enabled. It's quite a while since I played on PC but I remember I used to lose Sims on Sims 3 on PC it used to really bug me.
For a spooky idea though, you could add them to a Household together like a spooky church and graveyard... and I've just scared myself silly thinking about it!

Once a sim dies, there is a set time limit until the ghost is culled from the game.  I forget atm how long it is but eventually all ghosts will be culled.  You can extend that time if you use the Strengthen option on the urn or tombstone if you have it when it shows up.  It might take a while before the option appears though.  That will extend the time they will remain in the game.  You can do that repeatedly.  But, if the urn or tombstone is on a lot you are not playing, you may or may not get the wall pop up notice that they are fading away.

If you use mods, the SimsInfo mod will tell you how long the ghost will hang around.

The only way to keep a ghost in the game indefinitely is to make the ghost playable again by asking or inviting them to join the household.  Once you do that, you can move the ghost to its own household to free up a sim slot in their original household if you want to.  Since playable ghosts don't age, you can keep them in either tab in Manage Households.  For those that I want to keep around, that's what I do.  You can always release them to the Netherworld at any time after that if you have the urn or tombstone for them if you decide you don't want them in the game anymore.  Or you can bring them back to life by using Ambrosia, the book where you recorded their life, the Wishing Well or the Dedeathify spell if you have the packs that give those last 2 options.

    Hope this helps.

There are mods that can prevent culling of sims in game also if you use mods that is (MCCC being one of them)
