Re: Floor issue on top of customised stairs

Hi @SimmerStar4

I tried to remove the foundations but I couldn't add the stairs back, I had an error saying "cannot intersect with walls" or something similar. But which wall? 🙂 I removed a few of them all around the stairs but same error message.

I reversed to the way the house was before and tried to delete the stairs and put them back on and I had another error message saying "cannot intersect with foundations" (again, not sure of the exact wording) which seems to confirm your idea that it's got to do with foundations.

I was also thinking the wall height (set to low) could be an issue? But I increased them to medium and it's not working any better...

  • All right, I saved my lot into my gallery and I put it onto a different lot. I also set bb.moveojects to on.

The stairs had disapeared and when I tried to put them back, I had an error message saying "can't intersect foundations". I can put a single-width stairs with an angle just fine. I can also put double-width straight stairs. But I cannot turn the double-width stairs, I get the error message and the stairs turn red...

So I tried to increase the height of the foundations (instead of removing it) and I could turn my stairs again. But, the tiles disappeared again from the ground floor...

    Help please 🤔

@ceaufy   Hello!  I'm so sorry that you've been having trouble with your stairs.  Stairs can be really tricky, as you have seen already.  The footprint of the stairs adds in headroom above so that sims are able to navigate them, that's why you lose tiles above, to account for that headroom.  Even when you try to manipulate the foundation, it can still cause some issues with the placement.  Also, the move objects cheat will not remove these limitations for stairs.

All that being said, would you mind uploading this build to the Gallery?  I'd like to put the lot in my game to see if I can help figure out the placement.  If you do decide to share it, please name it something like "Problem With Stairs" so that it's easy to find and other players know there is a problem.

Thank you @JonaO703 for your answer. Yes, I assumed it had to do with the headroom but still there are some very weird behaviours here. Like why on earth does it remove the stairs when I build a wall in the garden for instance (or anywhere else on the lot, for that matter...)? Or why  single stairs are working fine but not double? And so on...

Anyway, I have uploaded my lot. I've called it Poblem With Stairs and added a #ProblemWithStairs. Let me know if you have trouble finding it.

Thanks a lot for your help!

@ceaufy    Thanks so much for sharing the lot!  So, I believe the problems you're having does go back to an error you already listed; cannot intersect foundations.  There is a built in limitation for it and when trying to place the stairs this way with MOO turned on, the game is still trying to "correct" it and deletes the stairs when moving / building walls within conflicting foundations.  I could be wrong about that but it's just my observation while trying to get the stairs in place.  I haven't figured it out yet but wanted to let you know that I'm still testing your lot.  I think there may be other issues here.

@ceaufy    Hello again!  I've done quite a bit of arranging and rearranging but just could not get stairs to work within the current configuration of the building; just as you originally reported.  I again believe that part of the problem is linked to an issue with the foundations, as well as walls getting in the way of the headroom.  During my testing, I tried adding a platform to make a turned staircase and the game generated a bit of terrain on the ground floor above the platform so my test sim got a routing failure and wouldn't use the stairs.  I tried deleting that floor and made a discovery that I think explains part of the issue.

There you can see how the game detects ground under the rooms even when the floor is deleted and the foundations are still there as well.  This is probably the main issue for the stairs being deleted when walls are moved.  I think it connects them for some reason.  Unfortunately, I think that means you'll need to rethink the layout for this lot.

I came up with an idea for keeping a turned staircase without completely abandoning your original design. Click the spoiler if you're interested.

    Spoiler

Basically, I created a platform staircase and bumped out out the entry way, ground floor bathroom and the basement stairwell one tile toward the street.  This will add enough room for your sims to access the basement.  Make sure moveobjects is on so you don't lose any objects placed with it.

-Start with bumping out the basement stairwell one tile toward the front

-Add a platform in that corner, raise it up two clicks and extend it one tile toward the front

-Add stairs at the top and the bottom (I just copied the ground floor stairs for this). Make sure the green boxes are on top of the platform.

-Go to ground level, move the entry stairs to the side, then bump out the entry and bathroom one tile. After that, move the stairs back to the front.

For my final touches, I added a small room in front of the entry for a landing.  Then I replaced the walls of the landing with fencing for a rail and placed the stairs on top of that. I added a half-hipped roof over the entry door.

Since the bathroom is bigger, I added a shower.

For the basement platform staircase, I added a dark wood to the platform.

    Hope this helps!

Thank you so much, @JonaO703 . Putting a platform and stairs on it just worked perfectly! Thanks again for the time you spent helping me. Now I can add back the shower in the bathroom (there used to be one but with the hole, I had removed it.

    Thanks again 🙂

@ceaufy   You're welcome!  I'm so glad that worked for you.  Have fun playing! 🙂
