What things can I swipe?! I can't find anything to steal!

I have a mischief level 3 teen and she wants to steal stuff. I thought.. why not? Let's do it! But it's almost impossible! I travelled to a lot and turns out I couldn't find anything to steal! I tried adding in a poster that she already swiped from rabbithole school (it's a basegame picture/poster of a high heel) since she already is supposed to be able to steal that but nope! I know it's tied to skill level so I tried putting in clutter items for her to steal, nothing fancy, just everyday objects. For example that Moschino stuff pack pile of magazines should be something that a lvl 3 mischief teen surely would "know how to" steal. But of course she can't. Please help! How/where do I find out what items can be stolen? This is super annoying and I don't want to throw in the whole build catalogue to try and find something she can steal.

edit: Not sure if I should post this to General or here, sorry for the inconvenience if this is the wrong section!

  • Hey there @siirysiir,

As kleptomaniac is my all-time favorite trait and I never have a Sim without it, I can offer a bit of insight into how this works:

    • For mischief skill 0-4 you'll be able to swipe items that are less than 300 simoleons (books, wall art, trophies, collectibles, clocks, lamps, various clutter decor, etc.)
    • For mischief level 5-7, you can start swiping items between 300-1,999 simoleons (chairs, tablets, various electronics, higher value paintings, etc.)
    • From mischief level 8+, you can really get going on your crime-spree and begin swiping items worth 2,000 and up simoleons (PC's, instruments, TV's, gaming consoles, couches, etc.)

Some furniture is not able to be stolen however, like ceiling decorations or specific kid toys.

If your sim has the kleptomaniac trait, she will autonomously steal something.from time to time. It is not something you control.

@jpkarlsen But you can though! There's an option on some (frustratingly few!) items that says "Attempt to swipe". I remember for sure that you can swipe that basegame bust. It's fairly expensive (I think it might be princess Cordelia bust even??) so I didn't actually try putting that in for the teen to swipe because I wasn't sure if she could steal it given her low skill level. But she should be able to steal some bloody magazines..

Oh and there's actually even a bug in the game that allows non-klepto sims to swipe those Nifty knitting craftable items but I can't remember if actual kleptomaniacs can..

I can never figure out what’s swipable at lower levels. Some posters I think, but not all. Trash? Plates? I’ve generally just waited until mischief was high before trying. The tense from not stealing does get annoying though.

@EA_Solaire Lovely, thank you for this! If you would be so kind, I have another question about klepto sims as I haven't played as much with them.. Am I just imagining things or did we have an option to pickpocket other sims with high enough Mischief skill?

    @siirysiir

Pickpocketing is not so much a part of the kleptomaniac trait, but actually part of the criminal career! Once you reach level 3 of the criminal career (Ring Leader) and you have level 3 mischief, you'll unlock the pickpocket interaction.

@EA_Solaire ah ok, thank you very much! 🙂
Dang it though, it would be fun for some more scruffy characters to be able to do this (non-autonomously ofc) even if they weren't in that career... perhaps with a lower chance of succeeding if they weren't an actual criminal..

Yeah, I love to send my klepto sims with level 10 mischief to the Plumbob Pictures Museum and have them swipe the suit of armor.  :D

Pickpocketing is part of the criminal career and is a lot of fun. I fondly remember my criminal Sim pickpocketing Vlad when he came by to do his thing... If you have Journey to Batuu, I think the Scoundrel aspiration reward trait will let you pickpocket as well.

While you cannot control what your sim steals from work, stealing is absolutely something you can control. At different skill levels, you can TELL YOUR SIM to steal items at lots they visit. Not all items can be stolen, which may be where your confusion is coming from. To use this feature yourself, try taking your kleptomaniac to the humor festival and click on another sims joker/trickster drink after they set it down. "attempt to swipe" will be an option. It is available 100% on those drinks because they are free, unless you've already attempted a swipe too recently.

Hope this helps both you and anyone who may have been confused by your incorrect response.
