what is the appeal of cars for a closed world? you will only be able to see your sims drive to your neighbor's house. Doesn't seem very exciting. It's not like Sims 3 where you can see your sim drive from one side of the world to their home.
I'm honestly just curious, not being snippy. The whole concept of wanting cars in the Sims 4 has been lost on me from the very beginning.
When you go to the grocery store do you teleport or drive? Cars add a touch of realism that TS4 sorely needs. Various other uses have been posted, so won't repeat them. They are also a way to express sim personality - sports car, sedan, truck, van, whatever. I've seen TS2 teens go out for the night by teen A coming by in a car to pick up teen B. If you have the Free Time pack you can fix up old clunkers for either sale or use. Extra $ and build your mechanical at the same time. Interesting animations, too. As for the helicopters, not only do they do the car thing, but if you go inside you will see that they have detailed interiors from passenger seats to cockpit area. I find them both to be fun and game/story imersion enhancing.
They can't even do that because FX paths and usable cars cannot share the same road or path. The game is already programmed for all the fake fx cars - so the other cars will not be able to be on the road ways or even the parking spots along the fake roads.
You don't really need to take cars into the road. Sims can drive them from the garage to the edge of the lot through a drive way similar to TS2. The loading screen would show up before the car goes into the road.
