[Discussion] Trait Combinations, Lifestyles & Item/Object Pairing Investigation

Every once in a while I see on the EA forums or Reddit there is a Trait Combinations thread. May it be what is your favourite, what is the most chaotic and what is the best. But most of the times I see one of a few things end up being the conclusion, 1: is that traits play no real part or no real difference in the game, 2: people choose randomized and stick with it, or 3: they opt out of the most detested traits.

As I have only been playing Sims 4 since L&D aka earlier this year, I haven't really had a chance to have these conversations and I just look up old zombie threads most of which do not have much on the new traits. So I propose a small community collaboration project reporting findings on certain trait combinations with or without Lifestyle or item/object support. Anyone can report findings!

To make this easier to report/review let's use a response format:

Traits: <list traits used here, feel free to include occult type, reward, aspiration, etc. traits>
Lifestyles: <if used, by cheats or earning properly>
Items/Objects: <list of items on Sim or objects place for Sim to help encourage trait synergy>
Plan: <what you think or hope will happen>
Results: <what actually happened>
Rating: <out of 10 how did the combination fair?>
Conclusion: <Any additional thoughts>

    Congrats 👏

I am so thankful for all the in-game played knowledge that simmers post here.

    It's so beautiful!

  • Traits: Animal Enthusiast/Rancher/Loner
    Lifestyles: N/A
Items/Objects: Any type of minor animal/pet from CoL or HR.
Plan: Will they care and build strong relationships for the animals enough with autonomy?
Results: Not really. Even with breaking down and hiring a Ranch Hand to help, just having them build relationships with the animals/minor pets was incredibly slow and hardly eventful.
    Rating: 2-4/10
Conclusion: Straight autonomy reliance (even with Ranch Hand help) 2/10 disappointing. With (player) encouragement and a Ranch Hand to pick up slack, seeing them socialize with the animals over Sim relationships/socials was cute 4/10. If Animal Enthusiast/Rancher autonomy was more like a Ranch Hands this be a 10/10 but alas it is not...

  • Traits: Spellcaster/Curse*
    Lifestyles: Situational Adrenaline Seeker**
    Items/Objects: N/A
Plan: Using Curses as a permanent trait to add variety to the game/Sim. I personally added via cheats but you can certainly gain the traditional ways.
Results: Various curses are not too terrible to keep on, and some are actually fun and interesting!
    Rating: 0-10/10
Conclusion: Depending on which curse you get or cheat add depends on rating. Also, eventually putting points into Hexproof and/or Magical Resonance, help stop getting more curses and/or prevents death if you have the Curse of Uncontrollable Charge respectively.  But after putting points into Hexproof, you cannot cheat add curses—so plan accordingly.

    • Adding Curse of Uncontrollable Charge is the best between giving a boost and causing sporadic overload set backs. The positive/negative buffs and results from this make it the most interesting. 10/10
    • Adding Curse of Scrambled Spells is fun for a non-main household member, it gives a sort of fun/unpredictable an Aunt Clara from Bewitched effect. 7/10
    • Adding Curse of Unwarranted Hostility, from what I can tell only occasionally effects non-friends Sims to fight with you. Which is kind of fun for a Sim you want to be a brawler and have lots of negative relationships. 6/10
    • Adding Curse of Infectious Laughter is in a way a slightly disruptive Good Sense of Humor/Neurotic stand in. 5/10
    • The rest I'd say range in the 0-4/10 range, for storytelling purposes you could try to keep these, otherwise too annoying to keep.

*Even though not traditional selected traits the game regards occults, lifestyles and curses as traits.

**If by  chance or by cheats you gain the Curse of Uncontrollable Charge, and not remove it, while also putting points into Magical Resonance—can result in Adrenaline Seeker. If you gain high overcharge without overloading/discharge, you can quickly gain this lifestyle without fear of Death by Overcharge.

  • Traits: Disruptive/Spellcaster* with Mischief School of Magic (Master Manipulator optional)
    Lifestyles: N/A
    Items/Objects: Voodoo Doll (optional)
Plan: The idea to use as an occult leaning trait for a more immersion, faster Mischief Skill leveling and a fun opposite to a gardener/Naturopath.
Results: Both positive and negative buffs when successfully or unsuccessfully trait lying socials or throwing off balance socials. Leveling Mischief faster is nice as for this Sim I use Mischief Spells and the Disruptive trait socials/actions only to raise the skill. But Disrupt Plant is both fun and helpful to help raise the Gardening Skill.
    Rating: 10/10
Conclusion: For Spellcasters with Mischief School of Magic this is a good combo to double down with the mischief. However, I am sure you get a similar effect if a Manipulation Fairy. The Disruptive idle—I am also very much in love with—it is less campy than the Mystical idle, and just looks soo devious. With Master Manipulator reward trait, this is a combination for a more adult/deception mischief, over pranking/childish mischief. If you are trying to make a Loki inspired Sim you have to have this trait.

*TBH there is just more effort in the newer traits, and though this is still a good trait without an occult Sim, I think it is better combined with an occult Sim.
