I’m tired of this happiness simulator

I did not spell/grammar check this because writing it made me realise that this game is like a Dementor.

I honestly think I have made a thread on this before. No idea, even then, it was probably a year ago. So, here I am as nothing has changed but I see light on the horizon.

So, I have this household. Everyone hates each other but they live together for convenience and because they are all dead broke. Everyone started at -100 relationship, everyone was stressed, everyone had bad furniture, everyone was stuck in a low-paying job, and some shared a bedroom. Really small house, so they were constantly in each other’s faces.

Within about three in-game days, one of them got promoted and tripled his income, two of them were best friends, and the other guy was neutral with the rest. I simply watched this unfold because I wanted to see what was going on. The whole arc was ruined because this game does not want you to suffer or experience anything bad at all.

Life sucks. Simply put, we just do not mesh well with certain people but that is not present in the Sims 4. An evil Sim can easily befriend a good Sim without it taking longer than fifteen minutes. I made the counter Vlad and they were best buddies in ten minutes. I did not even cheese it and sued basic friendly interactions. This is true for everyone, no matter what. Why, Vlad, an evil loner is open to speaking to people is beyond me.

Emotions. The highlight of the Sims 4. A useless feature. Sims are constantly happy. Décor makes them happy, coffee makes them happy, waking up makes them happy. Perpetual happiness. Their whole family could die but at least the room is nice, go away sad moodlet, we are happy now and will be because no other emotion exists.

This game feels like anything negative that may happen is removed. A random demotion at work? Not a chance. You can reach max rank and bank hundreds of thousands of dollars in a week in-game time. Wow, you did not go to college? Well, you can be an Astronaut, who cares? Wow, all jobs are hiring, huh? Finding a job with zero skills is not easy. No matter what, this game caters to young adults and their happiness.

Your spouse can cheat on your Sim openly and they do not care. They do not react, they do not fight, they just shrug and think back to that wonderful ham and cheese toasty – which is delicious, mind – and know their life works perfectly and their spouse is fine. Their relationship is fine.

Where is the drama? Where is the plot? Where is the realism? When do emotions matter? Who needs motherlode when you can just go to work for a day and make that anyway? Paint seventy paintings in a row and bang, you can buy a whole house because diminishing returns don’t exist, even though you’re flooding the market.

No memories, so every interaction is useless. If I cheat on my partner, why does this not pretty much ruin their relationship? Why will that partner still WooHoo with me, despite cheating on them five seconds ago right in front of them? This will continue into the Sims 5, should it release, I know it will.

Weight is another issue. I can make my Sim eat 30 pieces of cake and no weight, but he eats one lobster and there is 30% weight gain. No matter, though, as losing weight is easy. An hour doing yoga and boom, thin again.

The likes/dislikes system got me hyped for all of two seconds before I realised how useless and limited it was. Twenty likes or dislikes. So useless. None of what was shown is even impactful. The mod that must-not-be-named has better likes and dislikes than this nonsense. How? That mod makes characters sweat when they work out, yet base game has not got it? Where is all this quality of life detail? Oooh, suntans that no one uses because you need to sunbathe on a chair to make it work. Sunrays don’t exist when walking around. Nuh-uh.

Traits need to be redone and remade entirely, likes and dislikes should become primary.

If you dislike a lot of meals and enjoy finger food and quick meals, you could get a trait called picky eater, which makes your sim content when eating these meals yet depressed when cooking or eating lavish foods. Same with social interactions. Maybe a Sim likes hearing jokes and will gain more relationship when people tell them. On the flip side, you could have loves and hates.

A character who loves jokes will never gain negative impact from jokes and even laugh after the 70th joke in a row. Meanwhile, a character who hates romantic actions will just straight up say no to anything unless they initiate it.

Took me three minutes to think this up, two of that was writing it. Turn-ons and turn-offs need to come back.

I can’t play this game. You just win at it. It’s just constant Ws because nothing matters. You can’t even allow a drama storyline to unfold because nothing matters, all characters are perfect. God forbid someone just doesn’t mesh with your Sim.

Random demotions, random Sims hating my Sim for no reason, unable to get pregnant, getting fired, not getting a career instantly, enemies not becoming lovers in seconds, emotions that matter, a therapist for sad Sims, weight actually effecting health, memories, turn ons and offs, not being able to max skills and careers in a single day, not being able to paint or write for hours on end, traits that effect and hinder gameplay, traits stopping progression in certain careers (lmao why can my good sim excel in the criminal career?).

There is just so much that ruins the gameplay. People say they want more gameplay yet there’s none at all. The only age that is borderline ‘fun’ is young-adult/adult. Every other age is heavily limited, more-so than those two. I could rant about this for days. Thank God I just build and find that fun. Because the gameplay aspect of this game is gone.
