I miss the storylines / back stories...

šŸ‘‰šŸ¼ šŸ–„ STORY-TELLING, MEMORIES & RELATIONSHIPS šŸ—£šŸ¤Æ

Hey guys; sorry this is going to be a long one... Im not trying to drag The Sims team but does anyone else feel like after Sims 2; the developers have kinda dropped the ball with the storytelling element?

I know the idea behind Sims 4 is to create anything we want but I’m very much a ā€˜family / story-teller’ player so I thought we could share our views and maybe get our voices heard. (After all, this group is a large community of fans and I’d like to think the Maxis / Electronic arts team keep an eye on customer feedback in some way whether it be from this group, forums, social media etc) therefore I just want to open the dialogue to help illustrate what we, the fans are wanting from our Sims experience.

From my perspective the most important element I’d like to see improved in the Sims is the storytelling possibilities.

1:A - Storylines & character backgrounds; I find the Sims 4 pre-made characters extremely dull and lacklustre. They seem to have no depth to them; almost as if the develops quickly rushed through the process of making pre-made families to fill a town at the last minute.

To elaborate, it’s hard not to compare them to the characters we seen in Sims 2 where we had numerous pre-developed storylines going on such as the Pleasantview Love saga which involved a range of the town’s cast, the disappearance of Bella Goth, The Mysterious events in Strangetown. Although they weren’t overly complex storylines; they were still engaging and added an element of drama to our games. We’d all play out different scenarios for example, did Dina get her hands on Mortimer’s fortune, did Cassandra and Don get married?

The character backstories from Sims 2 were a fundamental part of the gameplay for me - as I entered the towns; I loved reading the ā€˜gossip’ and finding out about the family histories; I found it a charming aspect of Sims 2 and can’t understand why they stopped putting in as much effort with later games? I can’t imagine there’s much difficulty for the developers to sit down and discuss mini-storyline ideas or how some families could be connected and then implement them into the games?

The Sims 3 saw a few storylines although they were not as strong including the Alto/ Landgraab rivalry, the unhappy pairing of Morgana/ Thornton Wolff and the subtle implication he would cheat with Jamie. The storylines in Sims 3 were not as strong, they were still present but it took more imagination for example Kennedy had a pregnancy book in her inventory and was single suggesting possible adoption etc. I don’t feel as though they were as strong as Sims 2 but at least there was some effort to give the characters a bit of a back story.

However, in Sims 4, I found myself seriously disappointed with the pre-made characters and families. It appears no effort has gone into creating compelling characters who have an interesting past. One of the families; I attempted to play is the Pancake family but they are so dull? Their whole story is based on the fact one is a slob and one is neat? Zzzz

1:B - Memories are vital for storytelling/ progression and should be included in the base game. Not sure if we’ll ever get real memories in the Sims 4 but I think another one of the reasons the storytelling is more difficult is because the characters have no ā€˜past’; nothing to tell us what they’ve been through, what experiences they’ve had so it’s harder to identify with them. I loved reading about their childhood, when their parents died and their memories growing up, I found it charming and used it to imagine their back stories and make judgements about them.

I do hope we see memories in Sims 4 soon probably from a generations-like expansion pack and I think this would greatly improve gameplay! I’d like to look back on my Sims memories and reflect on ā€˜their lives.’

1:C - Relationships and Family trees aren’t as clear in the Sims 4. For example, Step-parents aren’t included as such in a Sims relationship; they may as well be Strangers? I find this odd. Also, the whole lovers, true love, soulmates I just think is confusing the way they’ve set it out. I’d like to see a more concise relationship such as relationship types exclusive, casual etc and also to see the full list of a sim’s family tree rather than some being hidden?

Although the Sims 4 is visually beautiful and I can accept certain things aren’t possible with this game; I just don’t understand why the developers can’t write a bio or create some interesting relationships between Sims. Surely It wouldn’t take too much time or effort?

I’m definitely one of those people who like creating my own sims and their storylines; however, I always enjoyed making my families interact with townjes and merging their lives but I find it impossible with the Sims 4 cast.

What do you guys think?

  • I think this would affect gameplay more if there was story progression. As it is, even if there were more complex stories, even if there were memories, and even if the townies' stories were interconnected, it wouldn't do much.

Take the Caliente household, for example. You have a great set-up, story-wise. Middle-aged Katrina lives with her her hot young boy-toy, Don, and her beautiful daughters. Their relationships are all neutral, though. Nothing ever actually happens unless you play the household and make something happen. A lot of households have stories with potential--Geoffrey Landgraab is a Secret Agent married to a Mobster, and their teenage son is Evil--so the stories are there, they're just dormant.

The game mechanics are different, and story progression is something I miss from previous Sims. I can't download mods (am on a borrowed computer for the indefinite future), so I'm very much in "make the best of what you have" mode, but it's not the stories I feel are missing, it's the constant changes that story progression brings. Maybe I don't want to play every household in the game on rotation to find out if the Pancakes' marriage survives or if Alexander Goth grows up okay in that depressing mansion.

My favorite parts of City Living and Seasons are that the festivals and changing weather make things change over time. For me, it's not the stories, I think the stories are good. It's that I don't want to be the only change I see in the world.
  • I absolutely loved memories, family trees and scripted events in TS2 - there wasn't a single pre-made family that I didn't find fascinating.

In TS3 I still loved it because it had all gone back in time, so you could put Bella and Mortimer together, there was a revelation about the origin of the Crumplebottoms, etc.

I actually assumed that when TS4 came out it would be set a generation or two in the future, for example maybe the Goth family would be Cassandra's kids, and you'd find out whether she was truly meant to be with Darren Dreamer or not. When it turned out to be an alternate universe I was really surprised and then sorely disappointed about the lack of depth. I think the first thing I did when I first installed the game was to find a premade family I recognised and go on the hunt for back-story, relationships and secrets, but there was...nothing. At best I would guess that it's like they've put in families they'd like to have made in TS1.

In short, I'm desperate for lore.

I don't think TS2 had story progression either and it was still absolutely filled to the brim with juicy storylines.
  • Yes! I am also a family player and storyteller and I would love to see more depth added to premade sims, relationships, and personalities. I enjoy creating my own sims and stories, but it would be great if the world around them felt more alive. I like premades to be flexible and open to interpretation, but they could benefit from more development to make them more interesting to play and interact with. At the very least it would be nice if their household descriptions matched their relationships. I also loved the premade stories from previous games, which offered great inspiration for players to continue on from and make their own, and also made premade sims more memorable. I am not against story progression either, but only if it is optional and well developed. It would be nice if premade families were able to continue on without player input.

I agree that we need more relationship options in CAS and more family relationships recognised in the game. I would also love to see memories return, along with more development and activities for all age groups in a Generations pack from babies to elders. I am hoping for a Romance GP soon to improve the romance system (e.g. chemistry, turn ons/offs, improved weddings etc.) and interactions. I want soulmates to act like soulmates and to remain loyal. I want more family/friend/group interactions and more romantic interactions (and I just really miss my sim couples slow dancing and cuddling in bed). I also want improved traits that have more impact on behaviour and emotions and other features such as likes/dislikes, favourites, character bios etc. to help sims feel and act more distinct from each other. This too would perhaps help premade sims to have more personality and stand out to players.
  • I've always written my own storylines out, backstories, parents all that with all that information is stored on a thumb drive. I've got over 220 sims of my own over dozens of households, possibly upwards of 100.

It is precisely why i did this because TS4 lacks this storylines and backgrounds features. I'd prefer a far more complicated situation with personal relationships and familial relationships with ancestral families like the Landgraabs and Alto. I've got old families of my own, the Manning's, Alderra's, Al Firaqqi's, Manderbrook's. I also got other old families like the Matthews, Everson's and Damme's.

The Manderbrook's are in competition with the Everson's (Brandy Everson is not involved, she made that clear to both families).
The Al Firaqqi's and Alderra's dislike each other.
The Alderra's consider the Manning's as close friends (Caleb Alderra is an exception, he is a third cousin to Julian Alderra. Caleb is unaware there are other Alderra's still living, so isn't involved in the feuding).
The Manning's aren't overly fond of the Alderra's.
The Matthews and Al Firaqqi's dislike each other (Sandra Matthews doesn't care about these rivalries).
The Alderra's and Damme's are good friends to each other.
    The Damme's dislike the Manderbrook's.

It is a long complicated family rivalry there that can't be explained easily. But that is one part of it, the personal relationships i'd love to see really fleshed out properly without having to rely on plumtree or any other ancestral tree building site. it would be great to see in the relationships: From Julian Alderra's point of view, Caleb Alderra: "3rd cousin, 1st removed" or something to that effect.

It would also be nice if relationships aren't so monotone, with it being one way or the other with nothing in between to muddy the waters a bit. Jacob Brantson likes Laurel Plato a lot, but Laurel Plato hates his guts, it would cause a very interesting situation.

Jacob is trying to be super friendly but Laurel is utterly hostile and merciless about it, and any positive comments are seen as poison to her but equally poisonous comments are seen even worse. on the other end, if Laurel starts being positive, it doubles the rate Jacob builds his relationship but Laurel's relationship increase in almost non-existent because it is past the point of no return for her, assuming she has anything nice to say at all.

Same can be true if Malcolm Landgraab walks in and sweeps Laurel off her feet, it would cause resentment from Jacob towards Malcolm and potentially a hostile response, where as Malcolm doesn't care to notice the cage creature Jacob, so nothing gained or lost. Laurel's relationship towards Jacob will take a big hit as well the more that green eyed monster comes out to play from Jacob.

I'd love to see some of the most complicated and intricate dynamic relationships one could get in TS4.

With Family histories and the like as touched on in a previous point, i got generations of family members in these families that aren't around and how they factor into things. Things the families gained and lost, reputations built good or bad and since lost or plateaued without losign anything. It would also be nice if for example other households treated the Landgraab's with a little more respect, after all their family controls a school and the power grid!
  • Am also a family player. I like the vague storylines that hint at possibilities as in each save I can give a slightly different spin on the relationships and storylines. The replayability and creativity aspect would be seriously damaged for me if the storylines were expanded eg. Take the Calientes in some games Don is involved with any 1 of them and in others I have different twists for them. Too many details or memories would make some of my storylines and family relationships impossible. I love how the game hints at things eg. Johnny Zest being a Landgraab but its up to you to decide if he is Nancy's son or brother or another realtionship entirely.

However i do miss story progression for sims I don't play. I miss having an option for this. They have a variety of on off switches for aging and autonomy so I can't see why we can't have them for story progression too. Before I got mods it was endlessly frustrating having to suspend my own gameplay to progress the otjer sims, giving them marriages and children etc. As you can't create babies in CAS you either have to play those sims or give them instant cjildren and toddlers. As was mentioned above, not everyone can mod for a variety of reasons
The game already has the my households other households split so it would be very easy to ensure that story progression only happens for the sims you wanted (so as not to ruin rotational play).

I'm kind of like this as well in that I like the open-ended nature of the pre-mades if I play with them at all.

While I've been playing without story progression, I'd be ok with it for unplayable sims. I do like being able to rotate among my own households without progression because I would not rotate at all if the households in my rotation were to change drastically while not being played. I'd be ok with an optional toggle for this.

I do like being able to make my own story progression in numerous households. It has been such a change that I don't know that I could go back to playing one household at a time.
