Let’s talk Pregnancy in the Sims.....

Let’s talk about pregnancy in The Sims!
Whilst we often criticise the Sims 4 for missing features/ lack of gameplay (sometimes deserved), I’d like us to appreciate how much pregnancy has improved in the franchise and offer suggestions on how it could be made even better.

Pregnancy chance 🤷🏼‍♀️
I know we have that trait which makes Sims more fertile; but I think it cold be an idea to randomly make Sims more fertile than others? So whilst one Sim gets pregnant after 1 attempt; another takes 15 attempts that kind of variation and a couple could visit the hospital to find out which of them is more/ less fertile.

Clothing 👗
The biggest improvement in TS4 is that Sims can wear any & all clothing whilst pregnant instead of a few restricted maternity options which makes a big difference! (TS2 & TS3 could never) In Sims 1; they couldn’t even get pregnant, a baby just appeared after kissing a few times so the clothing freedom is very much welcomed!

Discovering Pregnancy 🤰🏼
- The ‘take pregnancy test’ is a wonderful feature; it really adds to the gameplay. However, if I could suggest an improvement; it would be that sometimes the tests could be inconclusive or give a % chance of the sim being pregnant but they’d need to visit the hospital for confirmation.

- As mentioned the Sims could visit the hospital to check symptoms and find out they’re pregnant by visiting hospital or asking someone in the medical profession to check them over

Symptoms 🤒
In general, the symptoms haven’t really changed much since TS2. There’s still sickness as the primary symptom which is fine. However, I’d like more variation; for example, some Sims get severe sickness and symptoms whilst others don’t have many at all. Dizziness, craving certain foods, flu-like effects could be added like headaches and mood swings.

Length of pregnancy ⏳
Again, the 3/4 day window has been the same since Sims 2. I think this time-scale works for the majority of players. However, it would be cool if they added an option in the gameplay settings to increase or decrease the pregnancy time for that particular save file.

Additionally, it’s kind of monotonous having the same 24 hour countdown for each trimester and the labour; id like to see more random variations for each Sim so we couldn’t predict when the next stage or labour would start.

Size of Sim 👩🏾‍🦱
As well as the ‘bump’ increasing; it’d also be cool if their face swelled slightly as well as maintaining some of their pregnancy weight after birth rather than just going back to their normal size immediately after giving birth. That would be more realistic.

Modern Pregnancy options 👬🤱🏼
I’m not sure if the Sims team would regard surrogacy, Donors & giving up children for adoption as too controversial but that would be a great feature. It’s only stuff we see on TV soaps & dramas anyway and it what happens in real life.

Labour 🥵
I think the labour is pretty good in Sims 4, I don’t think I’d change much about it other than maybe having the option to call a doctor to your Sims home or a community lot so that anyone with medical training can deliver the baby.

Scans & appointments 🌡
Having your Sims attend appointments to find out the gender of the baby, see images of the baby growing as well as have the doctor advise you how well the baby is doing would be awesome. For example, the more healthy foods a sim eats will result in the baby having better traits/ being more well-behaved newborn.

🤰🏼 Variation 🤰🏽
Finally, I think I’d like to just see more variation between my Sims pregnancy, the way she reacts to it, the level of symptoms she has. I’d like to be able compare how my 1 Sim had different pregnancies with her children, how big her bump got every time.

What do you guys think?

  • Even in the very same person (RL) each pregnancy is different. I don't think all Sims should experience a swelling of their faces, for instance. I had four pregnancies and only had swelling of any sort with my last child. Also, the nurses couldn't get over just how flat my belly was, just hours after I gave birth to my second child. So, some women are pretty close to what they were even after giving birth. I know of one woman who is now the mother of ten and she is unbelievably lean.

I do agree that the pregnancy symptoms are all too regulated. We need some variety. My very own mother, rest her soul, never once experienced morning sickness and thought there was something wrong with both my sister and me, since we did have morning sickness!

I really like and commend the Sims4 Dev Team on the changes they have made. I like how a Sims' bosom swells as one of the first 'signs' of pregnancy. As for how sick your Sim gets, have you ever noticed that there is an option on the toilet for her to 'throw up'? I believe they have left a lot up to the player, which I appreciate. You could simulate a very difficult pregnancy by having your Sim use that option more than a few times, if you desire. In RL I feel very sorry for those who suffer so. Kelly Clarkson is one who gets violently ill, to the point where she had to cancel concerts, both times she was expecting. If memory serves, the wife of Prince William suffered so badly, they hospitalized her.

I would just be happy if they removed that ugly pregnancy walk that they do. No pregnant woman leans back that far when they walk. It just looks hideous. I currently have a mod to remove it. :D

I think they should have shown her waddle instead. I don't believe I ever leaned back, let alone as far as they have our Sims!

i learned to use that as a confirmation before my sims ever get to the toilet to check for a pregnancy and have used that check at the toilet to "throw up" as an option to know there is a pregnancy. i wish that would come up after the confirmation though. I'd like the surprise of knowing if there is a pregnancy on the way either by testing or waiting a day.
  • I like a lot of what's suggested here, by OP and others. Most of all:

    Pregnancy chance ??‍♀️

GTW's hospital, if it had been more interactive (like having Sims go there when they're sick) would've been great for pregnancy additions beyond giving birth there: prenatal care, ultrasounds, check ups etc.
But even having the chance of getting pregnant a little more, well, chancey would be nice.

I definitely love the fact that pregnant Sims can wear any clothing. I don't think I owned any specific maternity clothing items when I was expecting and since I wasn't planning on multiple kids, they felt like a waste of money. So not having to be restricted in the game is great.

What I would also love to see is a midwife or doula for home births. Maybe have a Sim that can be "hired" to come visit the pregnant Sim for a time during the pregnancy and do breathing exercises, talk them through worries, then be there for the birth if it's a home one.

There are some interesting ideas in your original post. I can't say good, because I didn't love being pregnant IRL (and somewhere around month seven I couldn't wait for it to be over - just like the moodlet says), and it's an area of reality I'm perfectly happy with Sims not emulating more accurately.

However, the part I quoted and emphasized above... IRL, pregnancy actually is fairly regular in terms of length. 280 days is the normal length of development, presuming there are no complications - and there are already mods to deal with those complications. The variable come in knowing when the pregnancy actually started, which perhaps the sims could simulate a little better. And yes, the length of labor itself could be more variable as well.

But the Trimesters being predictable... that's pretty true to life.
  • Currently in my 6th month of pregnancy and I am so jealous of the short while sims are pregnant, how little problems they have and how they go back to their original weight :D
  • Another thing the devs could have included would be to show just how difficult it really is to get out of that nice comfy easy chair, that far into a pregnancy! And using a small pillow for the lower back to help support it, would also be nice. Hubby joked about how I needed a crane to get out of my favorite chair. Yeah, we're still married. He's really an amazing guy and so very sweet, despite the need to tease that overcomes him from time to time. ;)

I always hear this & count myself so lucky. With my pregnancy, I was ducking under railings & climbing over them up until a week before the kid was born because she (and my bump) was tiny. Which, another thing that would be interesting to see: a pregnant Sim who's highly active, has a small bump.

(they can leave out the sciatica pain though, that reminder is entirely unnecessary)
a lower back massage option from friends/partners would be a lovely addition
  • They'll usually gain weight anyway just because their hunger need is decreasing a lot faster during the pregnancy. The reason why people notice it to a different extent in each sim is based on what they're eating and how active they are. This seems rather realistic as is, in my opinion.
