Oh no! I'm so sorry about this! :( I had my sim attend a concert (the rabbithole one iirc) and she came home to find her cat and dog needs in the red and then they were taken away. I was incredibly sad, I did the same as you and logged off. In other saves when the sim is gone the pets stay fine or happy moods, but not ever had to be taken away. I'm going with the idea that this is a bug, and one I'd like to see fixed sometime soon :neutral:
