Questions regarding sims genetics

a new user has asked me to make a thread with some questions cuz new users can't create threads, any help is appreciated

At what point is a baby genetics determined in Sims4? Can you keep reloading the give birth to randomize or is it already determined by then?
I am trying to do this without cheats.

  • Okay I've tested.
    My parent sims:

So I made them try for baby, then saved. After that I cheated the labour with MCCC, aged up a kid and took a screenshot. Repeated three times.

It's really the same sim, only her weight was slightly different (and maybe body in general, it's always quite random). Facial features didn't change.
Then I reloaded again and gave mother a few carrots.
    A boy turned out different.

After that I reloaded again and deleted the father during 2nd trimester. A girl is just her mum's copy.

@izecson ohh okay, thanks for explaining. so the kid got affected by what happened after being conceived even if the mom wasn't involved.
could this mean if you go into cas, and radically change the appearance of the husband, the kid would also get affected? or is it just affected by the gameplay?

now that i remember, we can influence the baby's gender by making your sims eat strawberries and listen to pop for a girl, or eat carrots and listen to alternative for a guy (or something like that) which means even more that the baby genetics keeps changing on the course of gameplay

    yes exactly @fruitsbasket101

It's possible since occult state is part of a genetic system I believe any changes to either parents during the pregnancy will contribute to the newborn look, but I havent got time to try it though considering I have been struggling to keep myself occupied to the game.

Lol this is how I gave my lesbian sims a biological (well biological to one of them) baby before I had MCCC cheats. Had one of them woohoo with a random guy I named Spe rm Donor and then deleted him since I didn’t want him on the family tree or for the relationship to show up in my sims romances. Honestly didn’t really pay attention to how it affected genetics, my sims 2 daughters really did look mostly like her

That's actually what I did too (my mother was not a lesbian though, just a single woman who wanted a donor). But I wanted the father to stay in the world, just not be related. So I decided to delete him and place a copy afterwards.
But I wanted to see how my baby will look like, I'm a bit of a control freak in that sense and also I just wanted to test it for fun. And iirc I made her give birth two times with the same pregnancy, expecting different results, but children looked exactly the same. When I deleted a father during a pregnancy, a child turned out being almost a copy of her mother.
Maybe I'll test it again, I'm curious.

Cool, thanks for testing! And realistic that the sims would have two sets of genetics, even if you're trying to play with a donor. I guess you could birth the baby while the father is still not deleted then delete him after if you don't want him up on the tree. MCCC really does make things easier - I have had lesbian couples just have babies together and mix their genetics even though that's not actually possible. I like trying to go for a back story even if it doesn't actually affect gameplay, and I liked the realism of having my sim need a "donor" to have her kids - and after they aged up to toddlers, I edited them in CAS full edit mode and made my other lesbian sim their mother as well. I just pretended that it took a little time for the non-biological mom to officially adopt each of her daughters :)
  • @somewhsome thank you very much for the detailed response!! <3

@izecson same i hadn't had a chance to open up the game for a while so i couldn't test this, but thanks for your reply!

Yes, I like this touch of realism too1 :)

No problem! :) I was interested myself.
  • Sex and number of babies is determined at conception. Skin colour (though limited to light/medium/dark or unnatural colours as Baby) at birth.

Not sure if hair/eye colour and hair texture is decided then or once the kid ages to Toddler (when it's first visible). Skin tone could potentially change with aging up too, as the range of tones is more varied for Toddlers.

Might be worth saving before aging the baby to toddler and reloading a few times to see if it changes each time.
  • @EmmaVane but you can alter the baby's gender depending on what your sim do while pregnant and also i think if they turn into another lifestate or change their appearance, so the baby genetics may be determined at birth. number of babies probably at conception
regarding appearance, i have seen people complain that genetics got messy due to the latest patch
  • I am testing several births with pre set pregnant sims from my library, and can confirm that skintone is picked at birth, however something is up with the alien skintones, I might make a thread about it ;)
  • I believe genetics is determined at conception. I had a couple give birth to a daughter and I wanted her to look a bit more like dad so I kept downloading them to different saves while still pregnant to see if I can get different features to appear with each birth and that didn't work. So I assume when they are already pregnant, genetics is defined. I like my game as realistic as possible so I don't allow my same-sex couples to have genetic children with both providing the genetics (I really like the adoption feature for this); however, I did accidentally delete a dad once to a single mom but I still think his genetics showed up. He was an unknown entity in the daughter's family tree.
