- Hi @IngeJones. I was disappointed the chests didn't work like the ones in TS3 as well. I really like sorting and storing my collectables and sharing objects between Sims.
The code for the storage chest looks like it's a modified toybox, but with a new inventory type called 'STORAGE_CHEST'. I found that I could copy the tuning and change the inventory type to 'SIM' which allowed for adding any inventory item into a chest object: https://simsinthewoods.wordpress.com/2016/02/21/ts4-download-storage-crate-test-version/ You could make an override mod for the storage chests that changed the inventory type to 'SIM'. The tuning is 'object_Spooky_Storage_Chest' '127277'.
I haven't tested it extensively, but nobody has come back to me with any issues.
I wish they'd look at inventory objects some more. I dislike that they don't allow us to add any inventory object. I dislike the shared inventory between objects which make sorting items impossible, and if I'm playing apartment style the neighbours keep stealing the food from the fridges! And I'd like any sim to be able to access them on community lots: I used to share items between households like this in TS3, like a swop shop.
edit: (Saw your post about the museum) Yeah, storage chests are pretty useless on community lots. They seem to have restrictions depending on if your Sim owns the lot or is visiting. I placed one down at a cafe and the sim I placed it with could use it, switched household and the new sim couldn't drag anything to it. The sim who placed it didn't own the lot, so it appears the objects are somehow tied to the Sim that places them too. It makes the chests much less versatile than in TS3! As long as Sims don't autonomously take things from the storage chests, any sim should be able to be directed to access them! - Try these objects. They work like a dream. :) http://modthesims.info/download.php?t=577301
- I tried one of each. The ones saying they were toy boxes I could put toys in and out of. The other ones I couldn't put anything in, even toys! What I actually wanted to put into them was the crystals and stuff I had been collecting, but I tried everything and nothing went in. The "Open" option was there, but I could't drag either between inventories, nor from floor to chest.
- Did you try buying a different one? leave your game then come back? Try fixing your game? I have used them since they came out and never had a problem, so it's something with your game. @rosemow can tell you how to fix.
- Hello
Try selling the chests and buying new ones and see if the issue remains.
Move your mods folder to the desktop. Then start the game and test to see if that helpss the issue with the chest.
Repairing the game may help. To do that, right click on the sims 4 picture in Origin and click repair.
Try resetting your sims 4 folder and see if that helps. To do that, move your sims 4 folder ( that is in Documents -Electronic Arts - then the sims 4 folder is there ) to the desktop. Then start the game, and a new sims 4 folder will be generated. Exit the game and then copy back the "options.ini" file and the "saves" , "screenshots" "tray" "custom music " and "mods" folders from the desktop sims 4 folder to the new sims 4 folder, replacing the new generated file/ folders with the old file/folders from the desktop sims 4 folder - Try testing storing items in the chests when on the sim's home lot.
- Oh well I have gotten around it by making a huge basement and putting up loads of shelves. That should do the trick. It's really mainly so that when scientists etc want to work on the machines to make stuff, they can pull out what they need without having to go on a hunt first. :)
- It's probably because the chests connect to the home lot/player's inventory space the same way that anything in the family inventory and the sim's personal inventories are (So that anything in any of those places are counted in the bill total for the lot). Public lots don't have inventories attached to them the same way that home lots have thus there's no actual space on the lot to "store" items other then when it's physically present on the lot (since stored items don't really exist in the games code the same way that the "physical" ones do.)
It's the same reason that Sim's that buy things in the stores don't actually have that item in their homes/inventories when you switch to them and Sim's only very rarely come into a family with any items in their inventories unless you've previously played them (I had one not-in-world sim come into my household with a guitar but that's the only time I've ever seen it) the inventory spaces just don't exist unless it's attached to the player. You have modded/cc chests that will work more like sims 3 chests? Can I get them?"lovejoyriteia;15105512" wrote:

Having read the descriptions it doesn't look as if this will work on community lots either, other than as the sim's own personal storage. I doubt whether another sim would be able to use another sim's chest. I guess I can ask.
