With the success of Sims 4, I honestly don't see EA attempting to cater to Sims 2 and 3 fan bases anymore.
I know it sounds harsh but it's just not feasible for many reasons. It's the natural process of a long running franchise.
Whether it’s Sims 2/3 fans or Sims 4 fans, there did seem to be a backlash on the lack of toddler thing...And the devs did end up including them, eventually. And the gurus did say they are listening to feedback, and I saw lots of feedback that was similar, whether a Sims 4 fan or whatever.
A life simulator / sandbox game would still have all sorts of fans demanding for the same kinds of stuff: toddlers, seasons, pools, retail, restaurants, pets, etc.
I really didn’t see a difference in the feedback. Many simmers, old and new, seem to want some similar things and want lots of content in a Sims game, regardless of whatever iteration it is.
If the next Sims game has an open world then we would know that they listened to feedback. At the moment I am not convinced
Well, I didn’t really care for open world in Sims 3, and I’m more of a Sims 2 fan, so I’m not bothered by a lack of a fully open world myself. Open world is not usually on my list of priorities for some types of games. Not every simmer is into full-open worlds.
I’m more concerned about toddlers and creative tools and options at base game. Those would show me more of the feedback.
TS4 doesn't have creative tools in my view. The biggest said innovations just didn't work at all. Emotions and multitasking were the biggest points of attraction, as well as the supposed "smart sim engine". Things like emotions and multitasking seem wonderful on paper but TS4 proved they just don't work at all.
Emotions and multitasking slowed down development and made it super expensive. Devs that left EA have commented on this, and current gurus are constantly talking about how hard it is to work through the new multitasking system regarding animation on new assets for the game, it's the reason there are no lounge chairs in the BG and why they have to be left for a bigger budget pack to make them, because otherwise they'd be considered an entire new gameplay object. I hope TS5 ditches all of them, multitasking, emotions and moodlets, and has a more concrete mood system, even if it means going back to the mood meter.
One of TS2's biggest points was that you could finally change the color of certain assets in an object in the BG. Coming from TS1 it was a huge deal, and having a color wheel later on TS3, including pattern changing was colossal for creativity. TS4 took away all of that and replaced it with color presets, similar to TS1, talk about going back in time.
I hope TS5 includes layered clothing for both tops and bottoms, outer clothing, inner clothing and jackets and gets rid of the full body outfits entirely, with the exception of perhaps costumes. That way we can combine multiple pieces of clothing and put together our very own outfit combinations. Put that together with a color wheel and you have the best creative system yet for clothing.
From TS4 CAS I would only keep hats with every hair, the tuck in boots and pants and the push and pull sim feature. Everything else can go into the trash can. Hell in TS4 you can't even have separate ear accessory assets like in TS2 and TS3 or choose what hand bracelets go onto.
