What causes unfurnished houses?

I was doing some maintenance in my legacy game on unplayed sims, and I noticed several houses I wanted to move families into were unfurnished. I know they used to be furnished, and I know I didn't remove the furnishings. When I move sims out of houses I try to always sell the furniture because I don't want to have families with multiple houses' worth of inventory.

Is it that the last sim living in the house died and when their assets were divided amongst their surviving descendants, the furniture was sold?

(Ultimately, I ended up moving the sims I'm probably never going to visit into the unfurnished houses. I'll put furniture in later if I feel like it.)

  • I believe if the last sim living in the house dies the furniture is removed. I've noticed houses with no furniture in my game as well and it's always after the previous owner died.
  • Yep, death. It's the main reason I have aging off for unplayed households. I built and furnished all the houses and I want them to stay move-in ready without having to put in a new copy from the library.
  • If the furniture is on the lot in buy mode, then just sent a sim to visit the lot and you will be able to buy it furnished.

  • I always keep a Template Hood with my most loved houses. That saves me from having to clutter up my Library with tons of houses.

In my game it happened when I sent my alone living Sim to university. When she came back, her house was empty ?
    The game sold her furniture.
It also happens when I merge households and move out the last inhabitants into another household via the household window.
So I try to move them out first via the map/evict household. When I do this the lot stays furnished.

Oh yeah, that too. I always evict families to free up houses or move them and I don't allow anyone to move on their own. It would be nice if there was just a simple checkbox in the game menu. Leave houses furnished when empty- check.

I keep moving in and out turned off, but that's mostly because the families that move out always seem to be the ones I actually want my sims to visit, and the families that move in are always random CAS disasters.

One thing I will have to do moving forward is pay more attention during my maintenance phases to which households are all elders, or just elders and young children, and either move them in with other family members or move them out and into the homeless bin.

(My maintenance phases are mostly checking for sims that have recently aged up to young adults or lost a spouse, moving them around and pairing them off so there are future generations, and occasionally consolidating families that have spread out a lot or that have way too many sims in way too few bedrooms.)
  • If you’re using houses that come with the game, often you can find a version of it furnished in the gallery
  • but if no one lives in the house with no furniture, how can anyone visit, I'm having the same issue. lot unfinished - no option to buy furnished.
