Being Capt. Obvious here, but can you drop the walls on the lot in live mode?  If not, then is the household showing up in Manage Households?  On occasion, the game will think that the household living on the lot no longer own it and you can't get into the house.  When that happens, the sims are usually all out on the sidewalk when you enter the lot in live mode.  The way to fix it is to move the sims out, then back in.  Sell the furniture when you do that so the house will stay furnished when you move back in.

    Hope this helps.

That sounds like you are in build mode.  And if the sim is not there, you can't get to live mode.

One thing you can try to get your sim back is to try to recover an earlier version of your save.  Just use Load at the Main Menu and use the recover button (next to the delete button) and pick the 1st choice.  After the recovered save is made, select it and see if the sim is there.  If not, then keep trying until you either recover all 5 saves or find the sim.

Another way to get your sim back if you made the sim, is to go to your library and add the sim back to your save.  If the sim was a premade and now gone, then you could save the lot to your library, then exit to main menu and start a new game, place the house and the sim, then start over.  Not ideal but it is a way to get both back together again.

But why the sim disappeared in the first place is a mystery.  So, it could happen again if you don't figure out why it happened in the first place.  A couple of reasons why the sim disappeared could be that the Neighborhood Stories killed off the sim while you were playing another household if you have it on for played sims.  If you use mods, you could have had some sort of glitch that might have caused it so check to see if you have an LE that might explain it.  I have had an LE that caused an entire household to disappear on me before so that is possible.  It was associated with apartments though, but I did figure it out in the end and was able to avoid it.

    Hope this helps.
