In doing what I did it now works and everything just syncs via the iCloud Drive. Not entirely sure how what I did fixed it, but it has.

Hmm, interesting. So your iCloud Drive is set up to store your Documents folder in the cloud and all your saves and other game settings are loading fine?- 7 years ago
Yup.
Just by doing what I said: changing the original EA folder to .nosync, then loading up the game which created a new files structure in the Documents folder (synced to iCloud). I then deleted the original EA folder.
Obviously in doing so I lost all of my original saves, but that was fine by me because I'd only played once before wanting to mod and I hadn't got very far anyway. Now everything is synced to the iCloud Drive and everything is working fine...
...but I'll be damned if I can tell you why!

Yes, it's weird! The Electronic Arts folder is hidden from Spotlight searches which makes the .nosync change even more bizarre. You can try it out by just entering Electronic Arts or Sims 4 or any contents of the Sims 4 folder into Spotlight.
