I'm also having issues starting my Sims 3 game.
I have a Mac 2012 macOS Sierra Version 10.12.3
Processor 2.9 GHz Intel core i7
Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Startup Disk Macintosh HD
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB
I have 388.56 GB available of a total 748.93 GB
I upgraded from El Capitan where I was able to run Sims 3 university life, supernatural, and high end loft stuff with no problems at all. Once I upgraded to MacOS Sierra, I can no longer even run the game at all. The startup play button does not pop up. I tried moving the Sims icon to the desktop like you mentioned, and that finally made the play window appear, however when I tried to press play it freaked out, went all black, and shutdown/restarted my computer on its own. I will try uninstalling/reinstalling now, but just was afraid I might not be able to use the same registration codes again.
Please let me know if anyone finds anything out!
Since I upgraded to Sierra from El Capitan I am able to just get past the plumbob screen then the screen goes completely black with only a white cursor and then the game stops responding. Nothing happens. Everything stays black. The game wont load and I can't even get it to quit without manually shutting down my computer. I have tried moving the game to the desktop, deleting sims preferences and starting over, playing from origin instead of disk (I usually play from disk). Nothing is working. ☹️
