Attention fellow simmers, I need help !

So a few months back, I got an external hard drive for my sims game, it's not fancy or expensive, I js needed a hard drive so I picked one that would suffice. Fast forward to now, I have not been able to full immerse myself in the game again because whenever I go to play it is extremely laggy and delayed even with the minimal cc. My mods folder is only 400+ mbs so it's really frustrating and not fun to play, the most I can do now is get screenshots and then leave the game. Now I'm getting desperate bc I really want to do my gameplay again so I was wondering if anyone knows how to fix this without moving the game back to my laptop because my laptop has little to no storage so I won't be able to get all the eps, gps and kits I need or cc and also without lowering the graphics, because I'll need those to be high for my screenies. I'd really like to play again so if you can, please help me 💔

  • Technically you can use a portable hard drive to install and play games, but it can impact performance depending on the specs of the hard drive. Some portable hdds won't load as fast as a normal internal computer hdd. The cache size of internal drives is usually bigger too, this means the drive can handle and load more data at one time (which is fairly important for games).

I think SSD drive are more suitable for games if you want to go the external way, but I'm no expert, so please ask the technical question to a knowledgeable person before spending any money.

Thank you for the advice, unfortunately, I wont be able to get an SSD drive so I'll have to make do with the drive I have right now

  • itsnyah10  Have you installed the game on the external drive, or moved the user folder (with your mods, saves, etc.) to the external, or both?  If your Mods folder isn't that large, and you're willing to move backup saves to the external, you might see a performance improvement from moving the user data back to the internal without impacting free space that much.  But having the game on a slow external drive is always going to have some impact.

You don't necessarily need a large external SSD either, at least not if the only thing it will store is Sims 4 itself.  The game is just over 60 GB these days, even with all packs installed, and a fast 128 GB drive may not be expensive.  You'd want it to be USB 3.0 or higher, and to have transfer speeds of at least 500 MB/s, which is fast enough for the game.

I have both installed on my hard drive but the reason I got the hard drive is so that I can have all the dlc + mods because on my computer alone that wasn't an option because the storage is not a lot. I only have sims related things on my hard drive anyway but I think I may have got it to work a bit better now, I uninstalled the game and all the dlc and gshade and everything, reinstalled everything, then started a new save, It's running so much better than it was before now. I just can't play with my gshade on which is okay but thank you for helping !
