Black Screen (no signal) after game update

The game did an auto update.  I get to the EA welcome screen.  When I choose Sims 4, my screen goes black and a while later I hear the music.  The screen stays black.

Rebooted.  Screen OK.  Tried again.  Black screen.  Rebooted.  Found the repair option.  It downloaded.  Try again.  Black screen.

Reboot and find this forum to ask for help.  (The video is working just not in the game.)

I was able to solve the problem with adding the -dx9 option to "advanced options" under "manage."  Why that was suddenly needed after a forced update is puzzling.

If you still can't play, please provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

If that alone doesn't help, please disconnect all your audio devices and restart your computer.  If the game works, you can reconnect the devices, one at a time and restarting afterwards, to see how the game responds.  It may be that one of them is the problem, in which case let me know which one.

  • c45fd0132bdd5d67  You shouldn't need to use DirectX 9 mode at all.  DX11 mode should work fine on your system.

If you want to repair DirectX 11 in general, sfc (paired with DISM) should do the trick:

    • Hit Windows key-X
    • Choose either “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator),” whichever option is offered
    • Inside the window that appears, copy and paste “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” without quotes, and enter
    • The system will start validating soon. If it throws an error, please list it here
    • After it reaches 100%, hit Windows key-X again
    • Again, choose “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator)”
    • Inside the window, copy and paste “sfc /scannow” without quotes, and enter
    • Post the message you receive here

Restart your computer, hit Windows key-i, select Update & Security, and click the box to check for updates.  If any install, restart again afterwards.
