Cannot play Error Code 22

Hi
After the latest update, I can no longer play the game.
- Loading a save causes the issue shown in the attached images.
- Selecting New Game causes the game to crash.
- I can only play the scenario with the provided family, but I am unable to save.
I do not have any mods installed, and I did not experience any issues with the game before. I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, but the problem still persists.

Please help.

  • Hi, puzzlezaddict
I do not have any antivirus software installed apart from Windows Defender.
Following your suggestion, I deleted the Sims folder in Documents, but this caused the game to crash unexpectedly. It also showed an error saying I had run out of memory, which seemed strange because I can still run other high-graphics games without any issues.

So, I went back to Windows Defender, added both the main game folder and the Saves folder to the exclusion list—and that seems to have resolved the problem.

It might be related to a recent Windows update. The last time I played, on 29 April 2025, everything was working fine.

Anyway, thank you everything is working now.

  • kotrakool  Please try playing in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop.  When you launch the game, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you've moved but temporarily unread by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet, not even from the Gallery; just start a new save and see how it runs.

If this doesn't help, please let me know what antivirus you use.

  • kotrakool  It's very possible that Defender updated in a way that can impact Sims 4 in the last few days.  I saw a couple other reports of this particular error, not nearly enough to say Defender is blocking the game all the time, but you may not be the only one.  Anyway, it's good to know that setting exceptions helps, as it usually does in these cases.

Hi, I am having the exact same issue kotrakool has described. I've also made a couple of posts about it in the Technical Issues forum where I was also getting the Sims Delivery Error code (multiple posts because they were deleted for some reason).

Anyway, when creating an exception for Windows Defender, should I delete the new The Sims 4 folder that spawned in the Electronic Arts folder and move the original The Sims 4 folder back to the EA folder? I added the new sims 4 folder to the exception list, and im still getting game crashes on the first loading screen. thanks for your help

  • melodyjs10  Are you getting an error when the game crashes?  Not all crashing on loading is related to Windows Defender.  So let me know what you see.

The best practice in general is to add your old files (saves, Tray, etc.) to the new folder the game creates rather than deleting the new folder and restoring the old one.  That way, you leave behind a lot of files you don't need, including some that may be causing problems.

I don't see any other recent posts from you, by the way.  The forum says you've made seven posts overall, and there are five from a year ago plus this one, so it appears there's at most one missing—the forum does still count deleted posts in the total.  When did you try to post?  It's possible the spam filter ate one post, but if you tried multiple times, it's more likely that the posts didn't go through at all.

Thank you for your response @puzzleaddict!

I was not getting any errors when the crashes happened, no. It was just the loading screen and then it would crash. I added the new folder (only The Sims 4 folder) to Windows Defender exception list and left the old one for now. Im OK without old saves, so I dont need to move those over. I opened up the game just now and it opened successfully, so I went to CAS to start a new save/game. Now, my sim looks like this (see attached) when applying some CAS items, and some CAS items in the list look like that as well. What could this be caused from? No mods or CC.

I was trying to post earlier this afternoon, I guess its possible they got caught in the spam folder. so weird!

If the troubleshooting steps in the first post don't help, please let me know which packs are affected.  Sometimes it helps to manually delete and reinstall them.

I now see one other post from you, which has been merged into the current bug report about the same issue.  (This thread here is older than the bug report, so I didn't merge it.)

Thank you, I will follow those steps now. In CAS it looked like Discover University clothing was affected. In build mode discover university was affected there too with some items displaying a giant X instead of what the build/buy object was. then one of my sims in cuidada enamorada showed up looking like that.
