Game crashing because of a save file

So after the newest update whenever I've attempted to launch the game, it crashes with a pop up "The Sims 4 has stopped working". I haven't been able to even get to the main menu. I tried removing the entire mods folder, nothing changed. I discovered that the crash happens only when I keep my main save file inside the Sims 4 folder. I've tried replacing it with my backups from days and even weeks ago but it still crashes. I've tried using the backup saves ver0 and ver1, but nothing seems to work. I figure that this save is corrupted or broken, but is there anything I can do to remedy the problem? A few days ago it was fine.

  • This just happened to me, let me tell you exactly what I did! EXACTLY WHAT I DID 😅

    1. Move the folder labeled The Sims 4, located at \Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims, to your desktop. Its new location should be \Desktop\The Sims 4
    2. Start the game, no CC, no Mods.
2.1. Enable CC/Mods in Game Options (I did this from the start menu. Not sure if this helped, but it was part of what I did.)
2.2. Exit the game. Now you should have a brand new The Sims 4 folder located at \Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4
    3. Move your mods/cc!
3.1. From \Desktop\The Sims4\Mods folder, copy all the contents to the brand new \Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims\Mods folder, EXCEPT FOR THE Resource.cfg file!
    4. Start the game, create a new save file.
4.1. Create a new household, save and reset.
    5. Create a NEW SAVE file.
5.1 Create a new household, save, and exit the game.
    6. Go to \Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\saves. You should see 2 sets of Slot_ numbers, one set for each save you just created from steps 4 and 5. The sets should be labeled Slot_00000002.save & Slot_00000003.save

    NOW..lol stay with me!

    7. Go to the TS4 folder you saved to your desktop in step 1.
7.1. open the saves folder (These should be your original saves)
7.2. Make a copy of them and put them somewhere where you can find them.
    8. Rename the copies of your original save file set to Slot_00000004.save (you just change the number to 4)
    9. Move those newly renamed files to the saves folder located at \Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\saves
9.1. You should have a total of 3 sets of save files now. Slot_00000002, Slot_00000003, and Slot_00000004.
    10. Start the game. Your original save file should be good to play, and you should back up anything if you need to before deleting the dummy save files from steps 4 and 5.

I really hope this helps, even though it feels a bit long-winded 😆

  • I managed to get to the main menu after I removed all my saves and started a new one in an empty game. After I saved the new save, I added back all my old saves and launched the game. I could click on my main save again, but it crashed again before it could load.

  • Guys it worked for me only when i did this specific thing :
    1. You remove your saves
    2. Load the game again and play a little until it creates a new save, change the end to another number so that it won't be the same as any of your olders saves
    3. Activate the CC in the settings ! Usually when there is an update it tells you that your cc where deactivated and that you need to activate them again the settings. You just have to do this.
    4. Put your saves again in the folder
    5. Load the game again, play your save and it should work !

Thank you, but unfortunately it didn't work :(

  • A little update from me: My oldest backup save is from January 22nd. I could load that one. But the backup save from March 1st made my game crash. This makes me think that maybe the update affects saves from March forward? The update couldn't have affected my save files that were in a completely different, unrelated folder, so perhaps it made them incompatible with the game somehow...

Thank you so much! This actually worked. I am able to play my save file now!!

  • For anyone whose game works only when they remove the saves folder, please use this master bug report:

Crashes on Mainmenu | EA Forums - 12139111

The fix posted above helps some of the time.  So does the same process paired with reenabling mods and custom content before trying to load the save.  If you do use mods and cc, update everything you can before trying to play with the content.
